Pics Of Painted Tailgate Mod

Since the truck was new I wanted to make the black textured tailgate handle match the rest of the truck. The only thing I could find was $130-150 ones on Ebay. I've always been a DIY when it comes to mods and engine work so I thought I would try it myself. Turned out factory looking and for $18 and a days work its well worth it.

I also added GM red takeoff doorhandles to match around a month ago.

You will need

80, 120, 320 grit sandpaper. 600 and 1000 wetor dry sandpaper

1 can Duplicolor plastic adhesion promoter

1 can Duplicolor T400 Victory/Fire Red

1 can "" Clear coat

Sand it down until all the texture it gone with the 80 and then move up to 120, 320 etc.....

I then wetsanded 1000 grit, washed, dried and used the adhesion promoter for 5 coats. The sprayed 5-6 coats of red, let dry and then 4-5 coats of clear. After a day drying I wetsanded the clear with 1500 and 3M Finesse IT II finishing compound for a mirror shine.

Sorry the truck is dirty but you can still see how it turned out..

HA! His giant brain is rubbing off on you.

I do think this painted tailgate handle and surround look really good. I was thinking of painting JUST the surround and adding the chrome inner handle... like the GMT800 Escalade and Denali look. With my chrome door handles, that would look nice.

NO but me and old Leo DaVinci had a grand time smoking pot together.
