Crank Position Sensor Replacement -- I Think Something Went Wrong?

A buddy of mine and I are replacing the crank position sensor and it seemed like the old sensor might have separated so that only the internals came out. The new one from Autozone has the right plug but does not fit.

I will know if this is what happened if someone who has done it can tell me if you can see directly into the motor once the copper piece is removed. Is this the case??

This is exactly what we have:

I've changed a couple of them, and one was on my '99 5.7. It actually look's like the same one you have pictured above. I didn't have any problem with mine, so, I'm not really sure how to go about trying to answer your question.

So when you pull the old one out can you see the reluctor ring?

Are you thinking a piece of the old part is still in/on the engine? Do you believe this why the new part won't install? What you pulled off, does it visually match your new part? Are you sure you have the correct replacement part?

That rubber seal can be hard to press into place. The new part won't go in as easily as the old part will go back in, since the old seal is probably hardened.

Put a bit of grease on the seal and press it firmly... it should snap into place.
