If you re-geared your truck for your bigger tires what gear ratio did you have?,what size tire are you running?, and what gear ratio did you go to?, and last of all how much did it cost?

I haven't had to do it personally but generally from what I've seen over the years is that if you are running 35's, 4.56's are a good choice for gears. Generally it should be about $1000-1200 installed for front and rear gears.

+1

If you want to run any tire larger than 33" I would strongly consider at the minimum 4.10. For 35" tires 4.56 gears would get you pretty much back to stock final drive ratio.

yeah ive seen the chart...if i decide to get them i will def go all out and get 4.56s im just wondering if anyone has gotten em done.....its kinda pricey so im going to do all the less expensive stuff first like a tuner and intake exhaust and what not...gears are a pretty big deal and if not done right you can mess alot of shit up...so thats the other hard part actaully finding someone who knows what ther doin....im not goin to mess with gear thats for sure...thanx for all the help

Gears should be the first thing you do, unless you want to be replacing your transmission. Adding power because you added larger tires is completely counter-productive, more power = more stress on the trans. Bigger tires without re-gearing = more stress on the trans. Bigger tires + more power = KABOOM.

Gears are a lot cheaper than a new transmission.

If you are looking for info for determining gear ratio check out this site.

He has alot of good calculation programs setup. I have used this to get my RPM's at freeway speeds before I changed to 3.73 gears.

yeah i realize that but honestly....i'd be willing to bet that 9 out of 10 people on these forums who have their truck lifted DON't have gears....trust me I plan on gettin my truck geared...but its hard to find someone to do it RIGHT....im real skeptical about people workin on my shit...especially after i payed someone to install my lift and ive had nothing but problems....wierd noises...shit rubbing...and im not talking tire rubbing im talking about metal shit on my IFS drive shaft...yeah so i know what my gears should be...but im having a hard time finding someone to do it around here

Where are you located in NC? I know a GREAT Auto shop if they are still in business in Charlotte. The Owner is Jeff. I'll try to find his contact info if you are interested.

I'll donate my experiences here,I bought my '95 Burb from a guy who had all the things done you want done. It's been lifted(6'' ProComp),has 4:56 gears with a Detroit locker in the rear and 33'' tires...all done by our local 4WheelParts store in Van Nuys,Ca.I've had this monster since last March and except for replacing the 4wd. actuator have had no probs whatsoever.I use it to tow my toy hauler to the desert and to a nearby lake.My Burb steers straight, stops straight and rides quite well for being as big as it is...very easy to drive...here are some picsMyRig.jpgBurbpknglot.jpgand by the way it's powered by a 454,gramps

Got a tape measure? Go out and measure the diameter of your tires,if they're close to 33'' you would probably be OK.That's assuming the 285s are stock sized tires.Look at your door jamb,it should tell you what size should be on it.
