is the rear diff supposed to lock in 2wd i'm pretty sure its never done it before

If the truck has the G80 factory option it has a locking differential. A gm mechanic has informed me that normally when one wheel spins approx 200 rpms faster than the other; the locking differential will engage but will disengage after it has reached approx 20mph. Apparently they are called a time bomb because if they are abused they will tend to self distruct. My two wheel drive works well with a set of snow tires when trying to get in a snow covered driveway. Regards.

Yes it has the eaton locker but i thought it was only supposed to engage/disengage in auto 4wd and it stay locked in 4wd. I thought it stayed open in 2wd.

No that is not the case. The G80 is mechanical and not controlled by anything other the then rear wheels spinning. When the difference between the two wheels exceed a specified limit, it will engage.

You're confusing the transfer case and the locker. They're two different things. The transfer case, ie. auto 4WD/4hi/4lo are dealing with putting power to the front wheels, and that's controlled with the button in the cab.

The locker deals with wheel slippage from one side to the other in the rear, and as has been mentioned is a purely mechanical system in the rear axle that works regardless of what the fronts are doing.
