Part On Backorder

Recommended Posts

I ordered two of GM part# 19155739 about two weeks ago from GMPartsDirect.com. I recently inquired about the status of my order and they replied that my parts were on backorder. Any idea how long I should expect my exhaust tips to be released off backorder and arrive at the dealership?

With the auto industry closed along with suppliers no parts are being manufactured until at least the second week of January. What is the part you need?

Exhaust extentions are not a critical part so your just going to have to wait.

Call or visit any GM dealer and ask if they show any stock at any of the PDC's. If it's important enough, such as something keeping you from driving it, a dealer partsman can contact a purchaser or expeditor to inquire as to the ETA. If you want to pay freight, just about anything can be ordered critical (or "truck down"). If we need to get something a little quicker that's on backorder, I order it Critical but specify ground freight which is obviously a lot cheaper than airing something in.

You can probably wait on something such as an exh tip or find another supplier but for other stuff, keep this in mind.

GMPartsDirect.com said that GM does not have an ETA for the part to be released off backorder. Any idea when GM might release an ETA? It's not a critical part, so I'm not going to pay extra to get it to me sooner.

Most parts are generally ordered in batches. The supplier in question for this particular part will likely do a production run and distribute the parts to one or more PDC's (Parts Distribution Center). GM will usually have an idea when to expect delivery. If they can't supply a date, then it's likely to be weeks or months, rather than days. GM also pumps out part numbers and descriptions for accessories long before the supply system comes up to speed. And most PDC's tend to build up their stocking quantities based on demand and "lost sale" hits from the dealers. So it's a chicken and egg scenario. If your particular item is new and there's been little demand, then it's unlikely the PDC's will carry it in any quantity.

One thing to remember with parts in general, they are distributed on a first ordered, first delivered basis. Critical orders are filled first, then Emergency, then stock. The oldest orders of an equal priority get filled first. If your "stock" part has been B/O'd for 6 weeks and another dealer slips in an emergency order, then theoretically they could scoop your part when it arrives at a PDC. It's more likely to happen with high demand items in short supply due to high failure rates plus recalls, TSB's, etc. A part ordered on a stock basis will usually arrive pre-paid to the dealer (assuming he makes his pre-paid order minimum) so you don't pay freight either. Higher priorities can carry a surcharge and will be shipped freight collect.
