Competing for jobs

Ok guys, got a couple of questions for you.  Obviously dealing with the title of the topic.

A fairly good buddy of mine who is a couple of years younger then me, is wanting to move back to Salina this summer and get a full time job here in town.  Awhile back I mentioned to him a few places where I was going to apply for summer jobs and possible part time work during the school year.  I have pretty good contacts at two of the companies, thats the reason I even knew about them wanting summere help.  His Dad wants him to go apply at these same places, but my buddy not quite sure he should since I will be going for jobs at the same places.  To be quite honest, it doesn't bother me in the least if he does, but for some reason it does him.  I don't think we will even be looking at getting the same type of jobs, but even if we are it is still no big deal to me.  I will list most of the education back round for each of us, and tell me if you think we will be looking at getting the same type of jobs...

My friend will have just completed his first year in the drafting program at a community college by the time summer rolls around.  He will mainly have manual drafting experience, with a small amount of AutoCad work by then.  Not more then 6-7 weeks worth.

By this summer I will have completed my 3rd year towards a BS in mechanical engineering from a state university.  I already have my Associates degree.  I have about 5 years worth of AutoCad experience (with numerous releases), a years worth of 3D modeling (with two programs), and have worked on a couple of design projects through school for local companies.

Now do you guys think we will be looking at getting the same type of jobs, based on our two different education levels?  And what should I say to him to convice him that its not such a big deal for him to apply at the same places?  I've already got two non engineering jobs for sure over the summer, which might be part of the reason I'm not worried about this.  I really want an engineering/drafting job over the summer, but I won't go broke if I can't get one.  Your guys thoughts?

I'm thinking the chances are slim of the company coming down to picking one of you two for the same position.  I'd think they would consider each of you for different job titles even though you may be at the same company.

I don't think there is any comparison in ability.  You could say that he is probably willing to get his foot in the door with any job (it sounds like any drafting/engineering experience is benefical to him, where you are more interested in say 3D modeling).  Those "any jobs" are important stepping stones in determining what you like/dislike to do.  You've already stepped on those stones.  If he lands one of those jobs, it opens him up to personal contacts to help him on his educational and drafting/engineering career.  Whose to say the job position is just between you two?  ???

Well I'm sure they aren't.  I don't know if he realizes that or not since he doesn't have a whole lot of experience with trying to get jobs.  Thats probably part of the reason I don't really care if he applies at that same places I do.  The odds of a job coming down to the two of us is dang near 0 anyways.  I guess I was really looking for more ways to tell him why I don't really care, other then just saying "I don't care"  LOL
