2008 Silverado Ecm Lockup (after Remote Start Install Attempt)

Recommended Posts

Hello, my first post here.

I tried using the search function but it wasn't working for me. I took my truck to a business here where I live to have a remote start and security system (Clifford) installed. Long story short, after two days the owners of the shop, who assured me they could install this system in my truck, told me that my ECM had locked up and they were removing the remote start and security system and taking my truck to the dealer first thing in the morning. I'm not very familiar with computer systems on vehicles but did they destroy it, or just disable it or something else?

Thx for any help!

if it "locked up" they probably jsut gotta reset it. I would imagine that they have to install a bypass module on the truck to get around the factory security for the new install. Sounds like they messed something up when trying to do so. Should be an easy fix for the dealership

This happen to our company truck (08 2500HD LS) the installers had to take the truck back to the dealer twice to get the computer reflashed. I guess third time was the charm.

Sounds like a bunch of knuckle heads. I install remote starts, car audio and security for a living. Your truck is not to hard to do. If they had to take it to the dealer these guys obviously have no idea what they are doing. Ask if the installer is MECP certified. If he is not and you have an electrical issue down the road the dealer could void your warranty. They should be using a Directed Electronics XK01 Bypass module with with Firmware version: GMDL6X 4.00. They can also us the CANMAX400 bypass module with firmware version: DLPKIGM6 0.05 and an XKEYCHGM, XKEY module. Although the XK01 is an easier module to work with in this case. They should also be using a Data to Data (D2D) cable to get full functionality out of the bypass module. Here is a link to the XK01 bypass module instructions. I used a Viper 5101 remote with an XK01 bypass module in my own truck. Good luck with getting your truck fixed and the remote start installed.

Thx for all the replies. I had my truck at Best Buy to have a Viper 5301 installed last week but the tech there said my truck had something different (passlock version or something) than other trucks model years and the part needed won't be available until this spring. The guys at the shop where it is now felt confident they could do it having just installed the same system in a 08 Tahoe and and 08 GMC truck. They claim to have installed their remote systems in many vehicles over the years and said they felt terrible about what happened. The owner is bringing over his 07 GMC for me to use until they fix my Silverado.

I just hope they haven't screwed up my truck.

Wow, this is crazy. I'm going to get an alarm installed, and from what I have read, the install is super easy. Only 7 wires are actually connected to the truck. Everything else goes through the bypass module. That is a shame, but please let us know what happens.

I own a small business and install too. We have been doing this truck for months with no problems. Like someone earlier said a xk01 works or a 1701g is what we use. Its not hard people are just too lazy to research it and do the work right. good luck with it. Also don't getted hosed on the price its not any harder than any other vehicle. We sell Clifford if your in the area. Paducah KY

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
