Save up $80 and get a cd player.

That's about the only advice I can give to someone looking to fix a tape deck. It's just not worth the effort.

My first home stereo had a 8-track player and a turntable. I bought it at Zayre's Shopper's City. I had to tape pennies onto the turntable arm to keep it from skipping. :D

The year was about 1978 or so iirc. :D

My mom still has one of those 8-track/turntable thingamajigs in the basement still. I listen to the radio on it once in awhile and it still sounds great...

Good quality aftermarket CD players with auxiliary inputs go for dirt cheap nowadays.
