First Oil Change, Syntheitc? Dealer Or Mobile 1?

Hello,

I am going for my first oil/filter at 3500kms. I am debating synthetic oil. I don't have a shop, I live in an apt. right now so it is just easier for them to do it.

Should I purchase mobile 1 from walmart then bring it along? or shoud I do this oil change as dino oil.

Thanks,

its a new 2008 gmc 5.3l

Try searching for "oil" or "oil change" or something of the sort. Anything and everything you can imagine related to oil has been covered time and time and time again, so you'll find much more info a lot faster. :uhoh:

If you want synthetic, a good dealer should offer Mobil 1 for oil changes. Around here its around $50 for an oil change with Mobil 1 at the dealer :uhoh:

As Dan suggested try using the search feature you fill find a lot of info quickly.

My opinion is to wait until 10,000 then make the switch to synthetic.

Also, check prices for an oil change using Mobil 1 vs buying your own and taking it with you. Most times you will save by taking in your own oil.

I went to dealer for my oil change today. The normal cost is $32, I asked how much for the synthetic and he says $72. I told him I'll go with the dino juice. I'm sure it's a lot cheaper to do yourself and the dealer was probably trying to make a few "extra" bucks.

That's questionable. I'll bet if you took your truck in and provided the oil and filter, they would still charge you 1/2 hour's of labor which I'm sure is at least $45.

I changed the oil in my sister's Trailblazer and got 7 quarts of Valvoline and a Mobil 1 filter for $15.99 at AdvanceAuto Parts. It was supposed to be 5 quarts but I'm in there all the time so he threw in the extra 2. Even with 5 it wasn't a bad deal. :uhoh:

change oil in a new truck at 3500 KILOMETERS? it's like 2000 miles? is this a "I just love making dealership and oil people richer" fetish?

anyhow, read this:

http://www.zag.si/~jank/public/bmw/oil_bible.pdf

and make your educated decision. 15 000 MILES between oil changes here on Amsoil. Swiss watch.

Mobil1 is a pretty darn good filter though.

I always change my first oil change sooner than later, just to get the larger metal particles all cleared out..

However the dash is telling me that I drive like a slow old woman and that I'm good till 12000km

i figure ill go taht long but then I should at least put in the mobile 1 5-30

just to note this is northern alberta canada and over xmas it was -41 straight temp in Celcius

I have also completed the first change well before 2,000 miles. My most recent co. car received the first change at 1,500 miles, the second at 3,500 miles. From there, I go with the requirements of our fleet maint. co. which is 4,000 miles.

I just believe it is better to get that metal out of there early on.

+1, I got my first oil change around 1700 or 1800 miles.

just had my 1st oil change at 2,500 miles with Mobile 1...son-of-a-gun it seems to be getting better gas mileage?....I hadn't really tried to make comparison of before/after but the mileage has definitely increased after the change...at 3,000 miles I'm sure the motor/drivetrain is loosing up a little but I have no way to tell if it's that or Mobile 1 or probably both ....has anyone had Mobile 1 show a change in mpg?

My dealer will change oil for $10 if you provide oil and filter. I go that route while under warranty so there can be no confusion as to whether maintanence took place. 5Qt jug of M1 at Walmart is about $26. I either buy M1 filters if they have them or go to Oreillys and buy wix filters for my GMs. The Ford/Mazda gets motorcraft filters and M1 from Walmart.
