Who Knows Video?

As the thread suggests, I am headed to Hawaii in April for my wedding and I'd like to buy a nice video camera before I go. Does anybody here have suggestions? I'd prefer flash or hard drive storage and HD video but I don't want to pay more than $850-$1000 on the upper end. I'd like to stay in the $600-$750 range to be honest.

Anyway, any and all help is appreciated. :uhoh:

And now... on to the obligatory thread extension! :uhoh:

I can't give you any specific camera advice, either...but it sounds like you have the right idea. Instead of spending a bunch of cash on a videographer for our wedding, my wife and I decided to spend the money on a digital camcorder. We enlisted a cousin to shoot the wedding and reception and took the camera on the honeymoon. Instead of coming away with just a wedding video, we ended up with a wedding video and a camcorder! :uhoh:

I was told we needed a Camera for our trip to Florida in May, but a few weeks later I was told it was unnecessary. Talk about technological blue balls! :dunno:

Anywho, I was looking at the Canon Vixia line of products. There's a couple different model numbers out there, but I like the ones that take SD cards (Flash). I like the idea of removable media, and SD cards are cheap and plentiful. I was skeptical of HDD cameras, mainly because I worried about dropping them and magnetic interferences.

That's the one I'd buy if I had no cost restrictions. You can find the HF10 online for cheaper. The HF100 is cheaper and has internal flash memory as well. The only problem with these Flash memory and HDD cameras is the editing on the computer. They record in the AVC format, and you had to go through a lot of conversions to edit properly. But I'm going to quit talking about that, because I don't 100% understand it myself. :wtf:

Sorry about the long post. The Sony posted above looks like a decent camera.

Congrats on getting married Daddy (that just sounds funny)

Where in HI are you going? My fiance and I are going there on our honeymoon in June. We're going to stay on the big island at the Hilton Waikaloa village. One of my groomsmen stayed there on his honeymoon and said it was really nice.

As for cameras, I got nothing, just wanted to say congrats.

For a HD camcorder that records onto HDD or Flash up to $750 I would look at these.

Canon Vixia HG10

Panasonic HDC-HS9

Canon VIXIA HF100

Sony HDR-XR100

For a HD camcorder that records onto HDD or Flash up to $1000 I would look at these.

I bought a Sony Handycam with a 60 Gig hard drive last July and used it for just the same reason as you. It did a very nice job. Cost me $550. Good for 14 hrs of recording. Throw it on a tripod and have someone operate the zoom if you like. Captures sounds pretty good, with decent video. I don't think you will disappointed. Ours turned out very well I thought. Very simple to use as well.
