5.3 With Squeek Under Hood?

i have a 2003 silverado with the 5.3 and there is a squeek from one of the pulleys i think i changed the belt and it still squeeks. it doesnt sound like altonator but i really dont know.

is this a common problem if so what caqn be

Seriously, if when the belt is off, nothing seems bad from a bearing perspective, I'd take a look to make sure that the pulleys that have grooves in them are aligned...pay particular attention to the power steering pulley as it's pressed on and if it's moved or wasn't pressed on all the way, the belt is pretty noisy just off idle (1000 rpm or so)

Check the idler or tension pulley.

best way to find the culprit is take a dowel and with the truck running put one end of the dowel on the part in question and put your ear to the other end of the dowel, youll know which one is doing it. Most likely its the idler or tension pulley as Draenor said, either way both easy changes.

Remove both belts spin both tensioner pulleys (main belt and A/C) and the idler (main belt) they should spin less than 3 turns free spin...... More than that the bearing is getting week and could emit a squeaking noise when the tensioner applies pressure to the belt. If you can deplete the tensioner by hand (as in move it) replace the tensioner assembly (NAPA 38158 Main belt - NAPA 38159 A/C belt). Idler on main belt is NAPA TEMP 209-769. Also perform same spin test on the alternator. It is possible that the front or back bearing in it may be going bad (same thing applies to the A/C Clutch). Check belt for any signs of near failure conditions such as; any cracking in the belt flat side/grooved or glazing of the flat side of the belt) (105 amp Alternator [RPO K68] NAPA 25-060923 - 145 amp Alternator [not sure on that RPO] NAPA 25-060930 - A/C Belt NAPA 25-040378). It is possible to for a power steering pump to cause this but RARE.

 

Usually you can count on it being a tensioner or idler pulley.

2000 Silverado 5.3L

Had similar squeak. Worsened when it rained. Never figured out why. Originally suspected serp. belt tensioner pulley, replaced it. No joy. Noticed that chirp was rpm dependent. When I observed both serp belt and accessory belt, chirp appeared to match accessory belt rotation not serp belt. Replaced accessory pulley $19.00. CHIRP GONE!!!
