so the guy before me some how had the starter hooked up so that it ran non-stop all the time so im guessin that why it burnt out. so now that i have a new starter i put it in i run my own Ignition switch wire and i had to run it all the way up to a push button but with my lack of knowledge im guessin i didnt have something ran right. so is there anyway someone can explain to me how to run a brand spankin new ignition switch and what do i connect it to. also does the starter have to be grounded. and its a 1982 jimmy 454 with a 400 turbo do u think i need to shim the starter

Here is a basic starter diagram, hope it helps, best info would be in the service manual for your truck,

 

as for needing shims, If you crank your engine and the starter makes a "noise" after you release the key (during disengagement), it is to tight and requires shimming, AND IF your cranking and the starter is very loud, shims need to be removed... Thats how I was tought anyways...
