18 Inch Tires

My truck has factory Bridgestone Dueler 265/65R18 on it. Not real happy with these tires at all and I'd like to get a set of Michelin's. But other than the Bridgestones, the only other tire I can find in that size is a Goodyear Wrangler. I had Wranglers on my Ranger that were fantastic, lasted five years over 40,000 miles with very little tread wear, so I guess I'd give them another shot if I had to, but I'd still prefer Michelins.

Michelin makes an LT275/65R18. Would this be to wide for my existing stock rims? Assuming they would fit, can anyone think of any harm I may be risking by putting on a wider tire like that?

How wide are your wheels? 8 inch?

On an 8 inch wheel I wouldn't go wider than 265. On a 9 inch wheel you can fit 275s easily.

Goodyear Fortera is an excellent tire in your size (265/65/18) BFG ATs are also available in that size. Both great tires.

Thanks, didn't notice the Fortera. Is that more of on on road tire whereas they market the Wrangler as more off road capable?

There is some misinformation here...

On a 7" wide wheel, you are safe up to about a 295, on an 8" wide wheel you are usually good up to about a 315.

If I'm not mistaken, the OEM 18s are about 8" wide, so you'll have absolutely no problems running a 275 as far as wheel width goes. I'm not positive whether you'll have any rubbing or not though.

I run 285, no bulging issues and no crowning...No rubbing either with the 2" RC level kit up front.

I'm running the Nitto Terra Grappler 285/65/18 and have had nothing but success. I also run them on my 03 Tahoe.

I've been a BFG All-Terrain customer most of my adult life and can honestly say the Nitto has earned my business. I tow a boat and the Nitto's handle the slickest ramps without a problem. I also do some conservative off-roading in the desert and the Nitto has not disappointed there either.

What is it you havn't been happy with on those tires? I have that same set and like them much better because of better handling with the lower profile of 65 and quiet ride compared to the 16" 75 series before. As for your Ranger lasting 5 years/40,000 miles, keep in mind a Ranger is way lighter with a narrower footprint and won't wear the tires out as quickly as a full size 4x4 truck. Ranger= lighter truck with way less pressure on tires with tighter turning radius requiring less aggressive movement to maneuver. I owned a 97 Chevy S10 and never really wore out any tires, just replaced them because of dry rot and they were rated for a heavier truck anyway. I've read it over and over again in ratings on tires that there were more complaints about tire wear from heavier vehicles.

Pretty much any tire can be mounted on those wheels you have as long as they are close to the minimum width and wider than the rim width. Those wheels are 8" (203mm) wide. I would imagine you could put up to a 285(mm) series tire or wider on those rims and be ok from what I'm seeing in the comments here. Just keep in mind your fuel economy will take a dive with the wider tire you get.

So if I'm understanding this correctly. 295 65 18 tire designation the 295 is the width? I always thought it was the middle number (65).

Nope.

295 is the width of the tread which contacts the road in millimeters.

65 is the percentage of the width of the tire.

So, simply put, tire width of 295 is 11.6" and 65 aspect ratio is 7.5" height, all around the tire.

Nope. 295 is the width in millimeters, 65 is the sidewall height (aspect ratio), as a percentage of the width. To find the sidewall height, you take 65 percent of 295 mm. To find the overall tire diameter, you multiply the sidewall height by two, and add the wheel diameter.
