Can Keys Be Copied For My '01 Ydxl?

Just bought our '01 YDXL and it came with only one key - can I just have a new key cut or is this a "dealer only" thing? not sure if there was any circuitry or specialized keys in '01

 

I did order a 2nd key fob though from online

Any hardware store that cuts keys should be able to hook you up.

If you truck uses PassLock II, then there is a procedure to follow to 'program' the new key. It should be in the owner's manual.

Something like: start the truck with the current key, turn it on and insert the new key. Turn on the iginition but do not start. Leave the iginition on for a while, 10 mins comes to mind....may be shorter. Then proceed to start. Check the internet for the exact procedure.

Of course, if your truck doesn't have Passlock II, then perhaps not an issue.

I got locked out of my 01 Silverado once. I called my Chevy dealer buddy and gave him the VIN. 10 minutes later I dropped by there and picked up a duplicate key. I think the cost was somewhere less than ten bucks at the time. Worked like a champ.

so if it has PassLock, I can't just get a hardware store key - right?

It really depends....they may have to the proper keys.

I don't have my keys in front of me, but there should be a code stamped in the top portion of the key (something like PK*....can't remember). Anyways, as long as the new key has the same code, it can be programmed.

 

If not, then no. Your owners manual should have that info in it.

Is an 01 Ydxl a Yukon denali xl? If so the ignition lock cylinder and keys do not contain any coded electronic components. The lock cylinder housing contains the coded electronic components. Changing an ignition lock cylinder or adding a key is a purely mechanical process which does not affect the vehicle theft deterrent system. To add a key, simply cut a new key to match the existing one. To change the lock cylinder, simply replace the existing lock cylinder with one of the same type.

All GM GMT800 trucks have passlock but the chip is in the tumbler housing not in the key. You can just get a copy made.

If your key looks like this (note the circle with cross in it on the key shank below the plastic head). You have the transponder key.

Then it must be programmed. Easy to do yourself at home.
