Couldn't Get Atf Filter Off

Recommended Posts

Dropped the transmission pan tonight. Besides being a pain due to the shift linkage bracket and the exhaust, I wasn't able to get the filter off. I was just assuming it would pop right out. Anyone know the trick to removing it?

Believe me, I pulled on the filter with both hands and it just wouldn't release. I wasn't sure if there was a trick to it so I gave up and put the pan back on and topped off the fluids.

I'm assuming your switching to synthetic. I've been thinking of doing this myself. Any other info or write up / tips you could provide when your done would be a great help. Thanks!

Dexron 6 (which is required) is a full synthetic ATF fluid. I bought the only Dexron 6 fluid that Auto Zone had which is Castrol.

To remove the shift linkage bracket out of the way to allow for the transmission pan to drop, you'll need a T-40 torx bit. I can't remember what size metric socket the pan bolts and the heat shield call for, but they both use the same.

Start with the heat shield (two bolts), then use the T-40 torx bit to remove the two bolts holding the shift linkage bracket (pain in the butt to reach). Then you'll be ready to remove the pan bolts.

I investigated switching to a synthetic oil for my tranny, till I found out what was in there is the only tranny fluid that is allowed to be in there and still be covered by warranty. I talked to a few places, and I was told that the Dexron VI was in there from the manufacturer, and it shall only be replaced by the Dexron VI. What came in your tranny when you bought it?
