Certainteed Class Action Lawsuit

OK, so yesterday I get a letter in the mail from a "Roofing Specialist" from Northland Home Exteriors saying my house (as well as many in this city from 1987-2003) was built with defective shingles and there is a Class Action Lawsuit filed. So, I humored him and called him and he stopped over. After explaining to me the issue, he then said he wanted me to contact my insurance company to get them inspected for wind/storm damage to rule that out so Certainteed cannot deny my house for that reason. I was skeptical and assumed this guy was just a desperate contractor digging for work on insurance companies' dime since nobody is spending money right now. I told him he can put me on the list for the Certainteed Class Action Lawsuit, but I would not sign the form he gave me which was an agreement to work with him throughout this process. I told him I wanted to look into it and contact my ins co before signing anything. So I plan on calling my ins co on MOnday to see what they know about this. I also visited the website (link below) to see what it was all about. It appears as though this may be a legit Class Action Lawsuit.

Read this LINK and let me know what you think. Also, I know there a few people on here that work in this field. Please post up what you know about this, as it is a nationwide issue.

Thanks!

Jeff, have your insurance company come out and inspect and then go from there. My folks had some LP (Lousianna Pacific) siding on the house they built, that was part of the same kind of deal. My parents got on the list and they paid for replacement of the siding, material and labor. My dad, brother and I did it the first time, so the second time around we did it again. Since it was a set amount for square footage and labor the check was for more than a direct replacement. We installed Hardie Board siding and sent the rest of money back to LP.

I do some roofing for a guy as some side work when he needs help and he used to use Certainteed shingles up until a couple years ago. Shingles on homes he roofed 5 years ago were already deteriorating to the point it had to be re-roofed again.

I had a similar thing happen on my house I had built in Austin back in 1986. About 1994 I was contacted about a class action suit against the siding manufacturer for the siding that was used on the backside of the house. It was delaminating and just generally apart. Turns out they paid for replacement of the siding.

I'd say yours is worth at least looking into.

The house I had built in 1992 and sold in 2005 had some serious curling and degranulating when I sold it.

This house was built in 1997/98 (finished in Jan 98) and after 11 years the shingles look OK. A little bit of curling on the tips of the corners in a few areas, but not bad. I had a "Stormchaser" roofer walk my roof about a year ago and he said I did not have any storm damage and never said anything about the curling or this potential issue.

Would be way cool to get a new roof out of this though.

I had this problem with certainteed. I my shingles were cracking left and right, not curling. They only reimbursed for the shingles, not the labor, at least at that time. They required a receipt and proof of lot number which I had. It was not a class action suit at that time either. Did you check certainteeds website? Maybe there is info there.

I've never used Certainteed shingles. I will normally only use Owens-Corning. I have used GP before also. I've never cared for anything by Certainteed, not even their vinyl siding. If I don't go to work today, I'll try and look into this for you.

That's all we use at work for our siding. We've never had a problem with it and it usually runs great up the wall. Compared to other brands, Certainteed has very little expantion and contraction from what we've found.

Good for you!!! It was a scam and you should warn your neighbors.

As for the lawsuit, it is true, but only on the old horizon shingles. Certainteed makes one of the best shingles out there. Better than OC and GAF for sure. I could get into details if needed.

If you plan to get a claim from Certainteed without the lawsuit, believe me you need a Contractor. We are in very good contact with the local rep if you need any help. Don't hesitate to ask questions. I am not on here to pick up business. I just wish everyone had a fair chance at the truth before they are taken by storm chasers and hacks that are out there. There are more and more of them popping up everyday with people out of work.

+1. Make sure you find a good contractor, there's a lot of shady and half assed people in this field looking for a dollar, and will take short cuts (on top of your roof) to get there.
