06 2500 Hd Crew Steering Noise: Dealer Says Cant Be Fixed

The dealer swapped out my intermediate shaft and my clunking has gone away. The tech said it had play in an up and down motion. He said it was defective from the beginning.

Magstar, I had something very similar to what you have described. I had several, including a good mechanic, tell me it was the I-shaft. When I finally took it in for warranty work 3 weeks ago, turns out it was actually the driver's side upper control arm bushing was loose. They re-torqued the control arm, it felt considerably better, but still not all there. Returned it again, they replaced the bushings, and it has been perfect ever since.

Hope this helps, it was a downer everytime I drove and could feel that slight knocking.

i'm bringing this back from the dead.

recently i've noticed a "pop" in my front end. Its go considerably worse over the last few weeks. I've been hearing it and didnt know how to reproduce it untill last night. Going down a back road, about 30 to 45 mph I kept turning the wheel left and right as if I was in a nascar race heating up my tires. I'd cut left, it would pop, i'd cut right, it would pop. According my my vin record at the dealership the I shaft was replaced I believe and I have a friend with an 05 witht he rattle in the wheel, which i'm assuming is the I shaft. However, I have yet to notice a pop in his, however we really never looked for it. I did a quick inspection last night, in the rain, which didnt let me look very far, but i had the wife get in and start the truck and cut the wheel back and forth pretty quick and I notice a slight bit of play at the joint that connects to the steering box, however it wasnt making the noise so I'm going to put it on the rack and see if I can find anything loose. I'm concerned about this because if something is loose, and I take a corner and it breaks free, well, that could be ugly.......... It steers straight, and no vibrations.

GM's tech assist dept. is now telling them the I-shaft fix doesnt work on a crew cab like mine and that they are working on a new fix but at this time I will have to live with the noise and check back with dealer occassionaly.

I have had an 01 1500HD crew and an 05 Avalanche that both had this problem and both were fixed by either lubing the shaft or shaft replacement.

Has anyone else been told this?

That sounds like BS to me. What if any difference is there in the front suspension/steering systems in a regular/extended/crew cab (comparing in the same series)?

I just changed the power steering pump in my '04 2500HD after shearing the shaft in the old one. I bought a rebuilt and the thing whinned like crazy. Even after the fluid had a chance to release all the air. So I returned it for a brand new one thinking it was the bearing. Well, the whinning noise is still there but much less. It's more noticeable when turning the wheel. I used ATF both times. Could this be my problem? Any insight on the possible causes of the whinning would be much appreciated.
