Yes, you need to change the front gears as well. To be properly geared for 38s, you'll need either 4.88s or 5.13s, both of which will wreak HAVOC on your truck with 38s. 38s are just plain too damn big for half ton suspension and axles.

thanks guys for the fast reply so it would be a good idea to put in solid axels oor just take and put ones in out of a 3/4 ton also putting in a 4inch suspention lift with 2 inch body thanks guys

No way you're going to fit 38s with only 6" of total lift. Just to fit the tires, you'd need at least a 6" suspension and a 3" body lift, and you'll still probably need to do some trimming.

But the only way to safely run 38s is to do a solid axle swap.

Don't forget stopping. With the extra weight & rolling mass I wouldn't be too confident on getting that thing stopped too quickly...

So you're looking at a pricey 9" total lift, 3/4 ton axles, and larger brakes all just to get 38" tires. I highly suggest getting something and inch or two smaller. A 36" tire, for example, would only decrease your ride height by an inch over 38" tires. Pretty minuscule and a lot more affordable and reasonable.
