What Oil To Use.

We have got the JD broken in now and I was thinking about switching over to sythetic oil for added protection specially with the heat in the summer and the long mowing times. We generally mow for about 3-4 hours. The X320 has the 22-hp Kawasaki and I was wondering what oil that I should use? So tell me what you use in your mower and also if you changed to a different oil filter, what oil filter it is? Right now we just use the regular Kawasaki filter from JD.

For my Kaw powered Lesco mower I use Mobil 1 10w30. I believe the manual said 10-30 is ok to use.

Can you tell any difference, smoother operation, cooler temps with the Syn? A what about 10W40, would it be better to stick with the 10W30 or could I move up?

Been using this for several years in my small equipment.

I use this Amsoil as well in my kids go kart. I have always used 10w 30 Syn in my JD LX188 with a 17 hp Kawasaki. I was using Syntec but have been useing Pennzoil Plat for the past 2 or 3 years.

My KAW is water cooled and I have been meaning to look into the Amsoil small engine oil. I think it is really desiged for air cooled engines but am sure it would be fine in a liquid cooled engine to.

I would be sure and use the specified weight no matter what brand you use. I say this because mofe 10W 40s on the market today do not meet the same specs as 10W 30 or others.

By "broken in", how many hours on your unit? If it's less than 100 hours, I would not switch to synthetic yet. The rings take about that long to really seat well in the Kawasaki engines. As far as filters go, I would use the Deere filter. Deere's filters are spec'd by them for their specific applications. While other filters may physically fit, they may not have the same filtering or valving characteristics. The only aftermarket filters that I have found that come close to matching Deere filter specs are WIX filters.

I was wondering this myself,I was going to switch to Mobil1 on my JD X304 but wasn't sure if it would be a good idea or not,I only have 16 hours on it and have already changed the oil/filter once at 10 hours.

Well dang it Rich, I thought you were gonna be the one to tell me what you had done with your JD.

After watching out last Home Depot JD bite the dust and knowing how hot the oil got thats why I was wondering about syn oil. My choice would be Castrol Syntec because I don't have access to Amsoil stuff and one quart is the price of 2 quarts of Syntec. It has almost 100 hours. I changed the oil around 12 hours (JD dealer is 60 miles away) and ran it all summer on that. I wanted to start out fresh this season with the syn. I already bought the Deere Kawasaki filter.

Sorry! I haven't done anything with it,No mods!!!

I did use JD oil and oil filter for the first change,I guess I'll just continue using JD brand oil and filters.

I think I'm gonna go with the Castrol dino 10W30 for this one to get it started getting used to the Castrol formula until I reach 100 hours. Plus it's easier for me to pick up Castrol than JD oil.

And I can't believe that you don't have any mods done. Maybe some HIDs and a K&N. The only thing I have is the bumper. Comes in handy more than you think.

Well I do have the front brush guard,It makes it look more like a "man's" tractor

The JD dealer is right down the road from where I work,So getting oil and filters isn't an issue for me.

Nice, Rich, you failed to mention you were rollin' on a JD. I'm actually planning on heading up in the AM to Maple Mountain Equipment in Butler to look at one. I'm looking at the LA135SE. It's a little JD, but it has a V-Twin! :D

I'm actually a current JD owner, too...a JD pushmower, that is.
