Drop In Mpg?

Dropped a K&N OEM replacement air filter in last week. MPG went from ~15 down to ~13.3. Yes, definite increase in acceleration, and I had fun with it before the first fill-up, but on the second tank, I babied her and she got worse mileage. Any thoughts?

Couple things: Dealer replaced OEM air filter box last week due to the worn away foam. They also R&R'd the drive shaft and lubed the shaft splines due to a previous intermittent clunk.

Thanks for any input.

Well it could be warmer air hurting mileage but chances are the oil from the K&N got on your MAF sensor.

Do a search on how to clean your MAF. It's easy.

That rarely happens but when it does, it's generally from someone not properly re-oiling the filter and using too much. If he just added the drop-in, it came pre-oiled and would likely not be an issue whatsoever.

Are you driving the exact same roads under the exact same conditions? I'd suggest keeping an eye on your average mileage over the next month or so as day over day comparisons are very inaccurate.

Ya' know, interestingly enough, when I bought the filter and opened it from the box, it was not sealed in the usual plastic. I'm thinking maybe it was a restocked item now, but it's my first K&N, so I had no idea they came sealed. Should i take it back, even though it's been used??

I've used K&N's in alot of vehicles and haven't had any issues. I've noticed in the past few months I'm not able to get consistent mpg's either. Watch your mpg for awhile and if they don't seem to get better maybe try cleaning the MAF. Good luck.

I went and read up on the K&N site about this issue and they claim that it's a myth and highly unlikely. Only thing I can think though is that since it wasn't in it's plastic when I bought it, perhaps it had been returned and whomever returned it, cleaned it and didn't re-oil it, or they lubricated it with too much, or the wrong oil. :wtf:

Did take a 50 mile cruise earlier and got ~23 mpg on a mainly highway trip, fan off, with cruise set at 69 mph. Drove roughly 80 miles more, but this time with the fan on, and a little mixed in city driving and got 18 mpg. Freakin' weird!

I'm just so paranoid about my truck sometimes and since I'm certainly no mechanic, I worry when something doesn't seem right. What if someone did re-oil that filter with he wrong sh*t, would it harm my engine? Again, prolly over-worrying, but my OCD has kicked up a notch this week. :P

Do very much appreciate all your feedback so far though guys. :D

don t worry about it yet. Maybe the gas you got was a little different even if you got it from the same station. One tank of fuel does not make a fuelmileage set in stone.

I just put a K & N drop in filter on my Denali. My MAF was was clogged within 3 days. Went to Pep Boys and bought a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner and cleaned the MAF sensor. I have a AEM CAI on order that is not oiled. This is the best way to go. My 6.2 pulls alot of air through the OEM Air Box which pull all the oil out of the filter. They also made the 2009 intake different which made the MAF molded into the intake. Good Luck.

I just installed an AEM in my truck and I like it. Like the sound and like the fact that every 20,000 miles I clean it with some solution twice, let it dry, install, and go.

Do the 07-08 MAFs work with the 09s, if so you could buy one from one of those vehicles and install it, or you could simply cut your MAF off the air cleaner box.

EDIT: also with mileage, my instant economy seems to show higher now with the intake. It's been hotter now so I mileage would tend to decrease. Maybe 1 or 2 mpg, I keep a running tab on my mileage so I'll see what it starts doing.

EDIT: for those of us in California, if you have the 08 Silverado with the 4.8L, 5.3L , or 6.0L engines, there is now a CARB EO for the 21-8023 AEM intake, AEM hasn't updated their site yet. http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/eo/D-392-33.pdf

No offense but I have to call :withstupid:

Had the AEM BruteForce Intake on my 05 EXT. Was awesome. I don't feel comfortable cutting and relocating the MAF into the 07-08 style. I will just wait until my new CAI comes in. I'm sure the 08 MAF would work on my truck, but GMC changed alot of items for this model year and with my luck I would mess up everthing dealing with the MAF system. Good luck with your truck. Ryan.

No offense taken. Had a K & N filter on my wifes 08 6.2 Escalade and did not have any MAF problems. Her stock Air box and intake was a different design. It seems that my 09 6.2 Denali has a cleaner less restrictive design.

I haven't seen anything from AEM that comes with a new MAF and since the 09s are built in, you would either need a new MAF or just change out the tube.

I am just about ready to order a new Denali 2009.

I really like the way the GMPP CAI looks. I also like the idea that it is GM.

I have had the K&N in a few trucks and like that as well. I am disturbed to hear about the oil getting into the MAF.

Does the GM CIA have a dry or an oiled filter?

Has anyone had any issues with the GM version?

Thanks guys!
