A/c Problem

I turn my AC on today and found that nothing happened so i looked under the hood and noticed my clutch on the compressor wasnt engadging when the AC was turned on, so the first thing i did was jump the relay terminals in the fuse box under the hood.. I then noticed the compressor engadge and felt the tubes from the condenser/compressor and they were frosty cold so i figured it was a bad relay.. but the relay checked out fine and i also noticed even with the A/C running with the jump wire i still wasnt getting any cold air through the vents.. so im wondering what causes the relay not to engadge, and when the AC is jumped and running why do i NOT get cold air especially when the AC tubes are frosty cold. could this be caused by some servo door flap motor or somthin?

Also what should the pressure be on the low side with compressor engadged and when not engadged?

If there was a leak and the pressure was low, it would not turn on.

What is the pressure with the compressor not running?

40 psi not running and about 15psi when it is running.. witch i think is probably to low but when it was jumped and running cold i still got no cold air through the vents?

IIRC 15 psi would be way too low and probably wouldn't provide any cooling. would have to check my computer for actual pressure need according to outside air temp and humidity.

Also, don't jump out the fuse. You will know if it is too low if you jump out the low pressure switch and it starts.

To check the A/C always put it on max cooling with your windows open.

<edit> I remember the procedures I looked at last week said 80* and not running poressures should be ~120psi. 40 is WAY too low.

Sounds like you have a leak!

Air conditioning systems have oil circulating in the tubes. Lots of oil!

So check all the tubing and especially the tubing connections for oil. Then also the "condenser" which is the big radiator looking thing in front of the radiator.

Thats the problem even when i do jump the low pressure switch it still dosnt engadge the compressor.

Only if the fuse box is jumped dose the compressor engadge with the low pressure switch either jumped or pluged in properly.

Thanks for all the help guys, i might just try recharge the system and take it in enless we have anymore ideas
