Trans Cooler Install - Fluid To High

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just installed a GM trans cooler on my 07 NBS silverado. Added about 1\2 a quart of fluid after the install to replace lost fluid and to fill up the new cooler. After checking the fluid hot and cold it is showing way to high on the dipstick. I drained out what I put in and it still shows way to high. The trans fluid was perfect before I installed the cooler. Checked all the new lines for flow and made sure the new cooler was operating properly. Should I drain more out? This would be less fluid then I started with. Doesn't make any sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Given if the before reading was accurately taken and the install was done correctly, yes drain the fluid to the proper level.

Are you following the proper procedure listed in the owners manual? Transmission fluid at operating temp. Engine running, transmission in park.

Yes. Fluid was checked correctly. Followed the install instructions for the trans cooler and there are no leaks. Just doesn't make sense how the trans would now require less fluid than when I started this install.... The cooler holds a small amount and a little was lost when I replaced the lines. Anybody else install one of the OEM trans coolers? Did you have to add fluid or remove it?

I would agree with Draenor, no matter where it was before, get it warm, check it in park on level ground and if it is over the full mark, drain enough out so it is at the full mark or slightly below. Slightly over full is not really an issue but I would not want it significantly over full.

I was on verge of installing a trans xtra fluid pan on my 2500 chevy, maybe I'll hold off on this one
