Regeared With 3.73's, New Question

so i went out to the junk yard and got a pretty decent deal on a whole axle that has 3.73 gears in it. the Truck packs a punch now! however, my only disappointment on this is how off the mileage is. driving down the road at 39mph according to GPS, the speedo says 45. I don't mind so much that its off, but what i don't like is that the odometer is going to be marking this significant difference. Since my truck has low mileage, I kind of wanted to keep it that way. Will bigger tires help, or is this something in the transmission? Can I do anything to fix this, or atleast make it better?

I could be wrong, but I think your truck may have a mechanical speedo. If so, in the tail housing of the transmission there are some gears. 1 you can replace easily, 1 you have to remove the drive shaft and tail housing I believe.

Here's a site that tells more about it. http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/speedo_gears.asp Not sure when they went to an electronic speedo. If I'm wrong, you can get a tune or a Diablo Sport Predator or similar handheld. Someone should chime in soon as to which way to go.

EDIT: Ok, looks like it's electronic. Get a tune or a handheld.

You could get a tune...a handheld. or you could take it by the dealer..or anyplace that has a TECH 2, and they can readjust the speedometer in about 5 minutes.

To answer your question, Yes you can do something about it. A good transmission shop should be able to fix you up.

If you take it to the dealer, it may depend on the dealer itself, I've heard some won't even correct for different size tires, even if they are optional from the factory.

Great, that is exactly what i was hoping for. btw, what is a handheld or Tech 2?

A "HANDHELD" is a device, like a Diablo Predator, that plugs into the OBD port on your truck and allows you to make changes to the computer.

Some people use them to do custom tunes to their truck.

A "TECH 2" is a device that usually only dealers have that does the same thing.

Like STEVENS07 said, a good trans shop should be able to do that also...and may be cheaper and a lot less hassle than the dealer.

Bigger tires (ie., larger diameter) would just take away from the extra zip you just got from your 'new' 3.73 axle. Looks like your speedo and odometer will be about 15% off, so for every 10,000 miles you drive, your odometer will show 11,500 miles. Easiest way to adjust is to re-program your computer with a handheld programmer ... one available product seen around our parts is the Hypertech Power Programmer ... google them to find out more about what these can do... and there are a number of other brands out there too.

Previous owner of my truck must have re-programmed mine for the slightly larger tires he had on the truck... I went back to stock size/grade of tire and now my speedo is out about 5 or 6% according to my GPS.

Are we talking about his 93 here? That is an OBD1 system. What Tuner or Hand Held is going to adjust it?

ODB1 ...? OOps!.. I retract my last post and apologize... I do not know what programmer can adjust or calibrate the computer on an ODB1 ...

Yes, sorry I didn't mention that I had an obd1 system. I called a speedometer shop and they charge like $300 for it  . So I am trying to find another way. They did mention that they can install an adapter, program the computer, and there was one other way that I didn't really pay attention too because the $300 price tag was still sinking in.. i don't think i'm willing to pay that much. Any other ideas?

can you find out what part the trans shop would plan to replace....

find one at a junk yard or parts shop...

and then replace it yourself..

you sound like someone who likes to do the work yourself to save the labour costs.

(and I don't blame you for that)

Also, from looking at the net today, it looks like obd1 custom tunes cost in the order of $250-$300 just for the eprom... but maybe for those $$$ you can get a little extra performance as well as get your speedo calibrated.

yea, I love working on my trucks, and doing whatever i can do to save some money. But dang, i didnt know the programmers were that expensive for these old trucks. i wish there was just a gear in the transmission i could just replace. if i dont find any other cheaper alternative i might just have to live with it. I don't put too many miles on this truck either way. i mainly use it for towing and working, but I am going to do a full resto on it down the road (it has sentimental value), so that is why I was trying to preserve the mileage on it.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
