Lets Talk 5.3 Cold Air Induction

What has proven to be the way to go with CAI on the 5.3 engines? Is a whole CAI kit the best, or does a K&N drop in and Airaid tube show better numbers? If it's the kit, which one do you like and why? It seems that I read somewhere that the drop in and Airaid tube showed better numbers, but I don't know.

What say the experts here?

Seriously, it really does not matter. Pick the one you like the looks of the best or the one you like the price of the best. They may gain you a few hp at wide open throttle, but that's about it.

They do gain you a little, but anyone that tells you that they get a seat of the pants change is feeling the placebo effect of all the extra sound. They make you truck sound like its a hot rod.

Are they worth it, for me yes. I like the sound and I like the idea of getting that extra few horses.

My vote is for the drop in and a MIT tube.

I have the Airaid MIT and a K&N drop in filter. LOVE the deep sound and I have improved by about 1MPG or so over stock.

Airaid dropin part 200-912 + AEM dryflow = better..

Heard problems with K&N not actually filtering the greatest and i'm not a fan of oil on my maf.

If you searched for this topic on this site, you will go numb reading all the info you will ever want.

Nothing new has developed.

The numbers you seek are not any different, or noticeable between any of them.

I have a GMPP with the AEM dry flow. Why? Cool factor and sound. My money to waste.

Me niether. I'm also not a fan of over oiling my K&N filter, which is the only way you will get oil on your MAF

your money, but im not putting my own vehicle at risk.. poor filtration is gold.. and cai is a waste of cash. Best of luck, but all bolt-ons here are topic'd to death just do some searching, you can do a clean looking intake tube from home depot for about 35$ too.

Do you have this installed on your truck? If so, how is the sound under WOT?

Thanks

Kenny

Not yet but I will be ordering one shortly. It should go well with my GMPP exhaust. The reason that I recommend the GMPP CIA is because a number of other guys on this site have one and I have heard nothing but good reviews about them. The only downside to it is the price.

I did some research on CAI's and I ended up going with the Banks RamAir CAI and I'm quite happy with it. Check out the Banks website, they tested their CAI against most of the other manufactures CAI's and I thought the data they provided was quite useful in helping me make my decision. Some may say that the results provided on the Banks website could be biased in favor of Banks, but I feel that the data provided is on the up and up. If the data were not accurate then the other manufactures would probably sue Banks for slander, but as far as I know they have not. The data I found most amusing was that a majority of the other manufactures cold air intakes (CAI's) were actually supplying warmer air to the engine than the stock system. This is just my opinion on the subject and sure the number of other opinions will equal the number of CAI's on the market.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
