Rear Axle Play

Recommended Posts

I have a 1/2 ton with the 8.6 rear axle (smallest one). One of the rear axle hubs has just the slightest amount of play, i.e. when I pull on it/move it up and down it makes a little noise. Is that a problem? Is there anything that can go bad back there? (seems to be the slightest amount of trace of lubricant coming out around the hub, only visible when the rear disc is off). Whats the thinking?

There should be some play in and out (axially). Any detectable play up/down or forward/aft (radially) on the axle, could be a sign that the bearing is worn and seepage of lube can also be an indicator of a bearing that's loose enough to allow the seal to wear and leak.

I've had to change axle bearings on non-floating rearends like yours in the past (El Camino, Camaro, etc.). The one's I've worked on in the past (not necessarily your truck design) , you pulled the center cover and removed a "C" clip in the differential unit where the axle went into. Then you unbolted a little retaining plate behind axle wheel flange and slid the axle out. The bearing is on the axle and is usually a light press fit.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. Do you need a hydraulic press for the bearing (light press fit) or is it pretty doable for a Do-It-Yourselfer? Basically, is this a project I can tackle? (How does it compare with stuff like water pump replacement?)

Jeremy,

Here's the pages from my 2000 truck manual for the removal and replacement of the axles and the bearing and seal are on the last page. They show the bearing and seal as staying in the housing and needing a puller to get it out. I can't seem to figure out how to resize these so they are larger. I'll try a PM.

Hey, thanks for the pics. I have the manual for my 04 so I'll look it up in there. I guess I'll try to improvise a way to get around having to use all those special tools. Thanks for the info man.

i wouldn't be worried by "slight" play. i went through the same situation about 6 mths ago, when i was chasing rear clunk and found play in one of the rear hubs. brought it to mechanic i trust, he checked it out, looks and me and says - what the heck is that you want? i say - play in the axles? - supposed to be that way.

i'd say, chill.
