Fuel Guage Calibration

I have a '97 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd short box. The fuel pump was just replaced and I ask them to do a fuel gauge calibration at the same time (the last time they installed a fuel pump they must have knocked something as the fuel gauge went past full about a 1/4 of a tank and was empty at 1/4 of a tank). This time after calibration the gauge still goes pass full almost as far as before, I will have to burn the tank down to see how the bottom end is. Interestingly I went back to the dealer and questioned them about the reading and they got ready to book me in to the replace the sending unit at $350.00 plus labour (I said no). The thing that bothered me the most was the service manager couldn't tell me what they did to my truck for the 0.6 hour service charge it cost for the calibration. What is involved in a fuel gauge calibration or did I get ripped?
