Speakers And On-star Quit Working In 07 Nbs

so i have a short somewhere because my truck (running or not) shorts out and all electrical dims or shuts off, then comes back on after a few seconds. Well today i pushed the on-star button and nothing happened. The radio read (Phone) but no niose. So i fadded the radio to the front and no noise. Rear works fine. Called dealership and they said since i have 40k miles i am out of warranty and they can't help me......getting ready to trade in for another brand i guess, which sucks because i have a 1990 4.3 at home with over 350k miles on it and just leaks some oil, had the tranny redone, ac redone, and other obvious things.

The other manufacturers won't fix electrical issues either after the warranty is up. If it's just the radio acting up, why not just pull it out and see if the connections have come loose.

Check your battery voltage. Should be around 12 volts with the ignition on. If not, charge battery with a battery charger.

Then check all main electrical wires.

Check battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight.

Check main positive wires to be sure they have clean tight connections.

Check the main ground (negative) wires to be sure they have clean tight connections. This includes a large negative wire going to the engine.

Check the wires going to the alternator to be sure they are clean and tight.

ok, now i am a bit more calm, just that was a VERY crappy way to start the morning.....

this is my 5th GM product and the newest. I have had no electrical issues with any of the others.

It's very dissapointing.

I will have to wait till Friday to check the electrical. I have an Optima battery becaust about 5 months after i bought the truck the OEM battery went dead as i figured to go with the upgrade.

I plan to do the following:

- check all fuses

- check radio connections

- check battery connections

- check ground strap (any probles with this, should i add another strap?)

- check the wires near the seat railing as this is common on GM trucks

- general inspection of all wiring

does anyone have any other wiring "hot spots" i should check??

Basically most of these problems turn out to be something simple. The hard part is finding that simple problem!

Electronics go "haywire" when there is not enough voltage (should be around 12 volts).

A bad battery, or loose/poor connection could cause this.

And everything dimming all at once... To me this says a main electrical connection. And what could cause this is possibly a bad connection. Or maybe the alternator is not charging the battery *sometimes* (makes things more difficult to troubleshoot!)

Maybe the battery is low, the alternator is barely working, but not charging the battery and the battery is slowly draining. Then the alternator suddenly stops working and the drained battery takes over everything and everything dims because the battery has a low charge?

Or perhaps the battery is good, but with a low charge and there is a loose wire to the alternator?

So basically want to check all main connections first. Check voltage levels and see what is going on. Check charge on battery. If low charge, this would point to a problem with the alternator or loose electrical connections to the alternator.

My front driver door speaker acts up every now and again. It cuts off completely for a while and then it comes back on. I have pulled the door panel off twice and nothing, so I think my problem might be behind the radio. I am thinking about putting in-dash navigation on but it still may not fix the problem.

it's not the altanator because when i have the truck not running, but on accessory, the radio and lights are very bright and strong one minute, then dim, then strong, then dim, then strong etc....

If the battery was low, it would stay dim. I did have the dealership change the left cigeratte plug a few months ago, mabye they unpluged a peice of the radio?? I also have "Gunk battery terminal protector" I applied when the optima battery was installed. I think i willo remove that from the connections as well. I do ride on some ruff roads, but not like 4x4 off roading or anything....

A guy i work with said it was the clock spring???? Don't know how. I can unplug it and find out.... Will that deploy my air bag??? I'll unlug it to.

So i know i have to wate till Friday to tear into the electrical, but on the way home everything started working again.....

the problem could be anywhere, did yo add a sub woofer or any other electrical equipment to the truck?, If the problem started after they replaced the cigarette lighter I will check that connection also.

Removing the clock spring is not difficult, a way to check it would be moving the steering wheels left and right and see if the problem gets worse or stays the same, but again electrical problems are very hard to trace.

I’ve had a couple oddities with the radio in my 08 SD. One time, all sound including door chimes, turn signals and the stereo went dead. I shut the truck off, turned it back on and all was fine once again. It acted as if I just had to re-boot the truck. Weird. The second one was while on a road trip with the tunes cranked. After about three hours, I lost the sound from the amp. The turn signal and door chimes worked though. Restarting the truck did not help. The next morning, all was fine. I suspect the amp went into some from of over current situation and just needed to cool down. I’m sure neither of these stories will help you, but figured I’d mention them anyway.

I finally bought new speakers and it fixed my problem. I guess the non-bose speakers are just that cheap that they short out. But I bought Infinity 6.5 speakers and they sound great and since they are 2 ohms they are actually louder than stock.
