Need Tool Box Ideas

I have a 08 3/4 ton ext cab short box. I have a roll top cover on it that i love. However i need some sort of tool box. So my question is any suggestions out there for a box side tool box that will mount and let my roll top cover go over the top?

What about the GM tool box that goes on their Cargo Management system. It will fit under you cover and then you can slide it where you want it.

I actually plan on buying one of these in the near future. They are a little pricey, but worth it IMO. Plus if you watch ebay you can find them for pretty good prices.

CMS so you can slide it back and forth. Otherwise you're going to be mounting it to the floor of the bed.

I wanted to get two of these to maximize bed space but couldn't justify the cost.

I ended up getting a hard plastic box with metal latches that I can move around or take out if I need to. It's plenty strong to stand on and has a tray on top for small misc. items.

(I too have a roll up cover)

CMS so you can slide it back and forth. Otherwise you're going to be mounting it to the floor of the bed.

awesome tx for the pic that looks very appealing. If it isn't to much trouble i'd love to see a closer pic of where the mount's attch to the box side. If you don't have time i understand thanks for the pic that you did post!!

I put 2 - 8' rail mount reading boxes on my truck. Love the extra height it gives the bed. Built a rear window protector to the same height as the tool boxes. I had a roll up cover made to fit on top of this. Works great.

I don't have any close-ups, but I have these. You also need the CMS rail kit that comes separate (know what you're buying - there are 3 different sizes for the 3 different bed lengths).

Yes, it's cut on the bottom corners to clear the wheel wells. There is also a gap underneath in case you need to haul a couple of sheets of plywood or drywall.

Note: The small boxes sit to high to have a cover on the bed.

Note2: You can't have a 2008 2500HD short box (5'8"). You either have the standard (6'6") or long (8') bed.

Note 3: If you own a business, you can get the Business Choice package that has the Rails, the large tool box and ladder racks that normally cost 1700 for only 264. the only bad thing that i found out with mine is that the tool box will not slide straight out the back you must take the driver side mount off the box to slide it off.

sorry i got sucked into my dad's trap here. we always called the 8' standard and the 6'6 short, my bad. Back in the day standard beds where 8' you know like before extended cabs, i should shut up i'm feeling old

I'll definitely be looking into that Business Choice package does anyone know if you can just walk in of the street and get that or can it only be ordered w/ a new truck?

One more question yet, the big sliding tool box, how well does it slide and how long will the sliding last. Is it on rollers or something? If i pack it full of tools should i just consider it stationary:-)

Well I just had mine installed, you should be able to walk in and the the package. Also i dont konw about full of tools but it seemed to slide good but you have to slide it evenly in the bed and hold the stopping pin out. The slide is just a plastic insert in the metal that you can slide out to take the thing off. All in all, it was a little smaller than normal toolboxes that i have seen but it was good that i didnt have to bolt it down and i could take it out easily.

It slides just fine with it full of tools. I have about 150 lbs of stuff in the toolbox, and it works just fine. It is also keyed alike to your ignition/door key, so that is an added bonus.

Yeah, but there's a catch (in NY anyway). In order to qualify for the business advantage the dealer requires you to not only purchase it, but you must also register it to the business. In order to register it to a business you need business insurance (even if you're a sole proprietor). Business insurance is an extra $1k/year because so many businesses allow illegals to drive and crash their trucks.

I think the reason the box doesn't slide out the back is theft deterrent - the ladder racks, bed divider, etc, also won't just slide on and off.

Between the metal (aluminum) tracks and metal box rails is a hard plastic liner that the box rides on.

The business advantage is presented at the time of purchase on a new truck. You need to have a business certificate (obtained at your local courthouse for $50 or so) plus the proof of insurance.
