Stock Tune

Recommended Posts

Well sent my ECM and TCM to Justin for some adjustments and have the stock modules in the truck. What a wake-up call that is. If anyone ever starts to think there tune is not all that great and there is not much of a gain, just switch back to stock. You'll really appreciate your tune. If I can get that chugging/surging while at cruising speeds and harsh AFM switching taken care of I will be a happier GM owner.

I hear ya... Even when I had HP3 on my last truck... if you don't think it does much, just detune. Quite a difference

Is this the reason that you sent your ECM back to Justin?

YEP... you know any secrets other than turning off AFM and even that won't cure the chugging/surging while cruising.

Are you sure that turning off the AFM won't cure that? The only chug/surge I ever fill with my Vmax after Justin tuned it is when the TC locks and unlocks when the AFM is activated and deactivated. Otherwise it is smooth as silk.

Actually I am not sure that won't cure that. However I can feel that chug even when in v8 mode while maintaing speed on a slight incline. Last time Justin did a ride along with me he made a few adustments and one of them was something with the TC. Anyway as the adjustment settled in on the way home it got worse. I was thinking of turning off AFM since most say there was no real difference in mileage but Justin seemed to think I was making good use of AFM. I hate to keep bothering Justin with this but when something isn't right with my truck it bugs the sh** out of me. By the way nice Nova, I had a 67 when I was young (long time ago) and dumb..never really did anything much with it but the 283 and the 2speed powerglide tranny were fun..

While I can feel and see (on the DIC) the AFM engage/disengage, I don't think it's particularly annoying.

The delay in throttle response is my peeve. Even after Justin tuned a set of ECM/TCMs for me, the delay is still there. Still feels like a carburetor with a inop accelerator pump. It's amazing to me that GM would sell a crappy driving engine. Anyway, while Justin took about half of the delay out, it still drives like a bad carburetor to me. My dead stock 99 6.0L drives much better. I had asked to be scheduled for a custom dyno tune, but evidently they forgot me when he came out to CA.

Jeff,

Did your truck have that chugging/surge even when it wasn't trying to switch from V8 to V4, say just cruising on a slight uphill pull? If it did, is it all gone since you turned off AFM?

99.9% of the time it was when AFM was activating/deactivating. I have felt the tcc kick in and out a couple of times while under very light load at low highway speeds. But not very often.

Thanks for the input. We'll see what Justin comes up with this time around. I know with the stock tune AFM was almost undetectable. Maybe he will go back to stock parameters for AFM. I think he really wants to figure out why it's so much more noticeable when tuned. If he tells me he needs it in the truck to get it right, it's no big deal. I'm only 55 minutes away. But he may be tired of seeing me....
