Sources for inexpensive NV4500?

I'll be buying a '95 K2500 6.5TD Suburban soon & would like to convert to the NV4500, preferably the '92-'94(?) version with the 6.34 1st gear. Does anyone know where I can buy one at a good price? If not the 6.34 version, would it be possible to replace the 5.61 1st gear with the 6.34?

The only resonable place to get what you'll need is a junkyard.  You are going to need a lot of parts from a donor pickup.  I personally prefer manual transmissions, but I can't for the life of me think why you would care about the difference between 5.61 and 6.34,??? they are both very very low gears, and the difference is only about 13%.  Also the 5.61 is synchonised, while the 6.34 is not.  If what you care about is really creeping off road, the transmission that's already in there will crawl all day without stalling.

 

I understand that there is at least one outfit that will swap the 6.34 gear into a 5.61 transmission, and even retain the syncro, but you asked about good prices, and that change isn't cheap.

 

I don't object to the idea of the swap, I think a 5 speed Suburban would be cool, In fact I think GM should have offerred them that way, but I think you're getting carried away if you've just got to have the 6.34 low.  If you find the trans with the 6.34 in it, go for it, but don't be too disappointed if you can only find the 5.61.

 

Just my opinion, and worth what you paid for it.

CK, I figured as long as I'm shopping for a NV4500 why not look for one with the deepest 1st gear but I didn't know that the 6.34 wasn't synchronized. Guess that changes my plans unless I can find a place that offers a 6.34 synch version.
