Overhaeating (new) Trans

I have an 06 2500cc 4wd that I bought used w/ 70k. When i bought it, the trans was running hot 265+. I took it back and the dealership, and they put in a new trans sent by the warrenty company, not GM remanufactured. My friend went by the dealership, and said it came in a crate similar to the GM one, and it came from virginia.

I drove it about 30miles, unloaded and the trans temp gauge reached 250. while the engine temp was at 200. I called back and the mechanic said to bring it back. He did mention the trans was painted black and it might cause it to retain heat, I doubt this.

I am thinking there must be an issue with the cooling of the trans with the ext cooler, But I think they checked it. Not sure if ther is anything that would cause a drag on the truck causing it to work harder?

Any thoughts ???

Thanks

Steve

Don't know what size external cooler your truck has, but it probably needs a 11" x 11" x 3/4" stacked plate cooler.

It was the one that came w/ the truck. Stock I would guess. I plan to upgrade to a larger one for when I tow a car trailer and track car. But driving around town, it should suffice. Not sure what is causing my trans temp to run high. Curious if anyone had a similar experience or other places to look. I was wondering if anything in the drive train could be putting stress on the trans causing it to heat up, by not working properly?

Thanks

Nobody replaces a transmission just because the gauge says it is running hot? Did the transmission quit working as a result of this? What if just the temperature sending unit on the transmission is defective? Did they replace that or did it come with a new transmission?

Also, were you towing something heavy when the high temperature was indicated by the gauge?

even more basic...is the tranny temp gauge accurate?

Assuming this gauge is accurate, would start looking for a cooler or cooler line blockage/constriction.

I am pretty sure the guage is accurate. Previously the gauge was running close to 270, then the engine light came on and the information display read "transmission hot". I had just purchased the truck and have only driven on the street. The dealership took the truck in on trade, as the previous owner used the truck for work on a farm. The warrenty company sent a remanufactured trans that was just installed.

I am thinking that there is a blockage in the cooling system, which I would have fiqured the would easily have identified this. Or something possibly putting a drag that iss causing the truck to work harder. The engine temp was around 200.

I plan to drop it off monday at a mechanic friend of mine who is a transmission mechanic, and let him identify the problem. Just curious what could be the deal.

Since you have already eliminated the first possible source i say the cooler lines are plugged but driving on the highway it should not overheat as the converter is locked and no oil passes through the cooler in TCC. Have the vehicle scanned and look if the TCC is locked at cruising speed on level road, should be zero slippage.
