Fuel System Cleaner?

Recommended Posts

Well, I/ve noticed my truck seems to be getting a little less (like 1-1.5) MPG, and I was thinking maybe it'd be a good idea to put in some fuel system cleaner (like techron, STP etc). I'm wondering- do they really work? Is there one GM recommends? Which one's the best?

Thanks,

Matt

The GM fuel system cleaner is Chevron w/ Techron in the same bottle but with a different label. That is what I have always used. I put a bottle through twice a year. From everything I've read and heard this is the best stuff to clean the fuel system.

I can't speak as to what it really does, I never notice a difference after using it. Then again I don't ever use it due to the fact I'm having an issue, just a regular PM item.

+1 :)

The GM cleaner is the Chevron/Techron stuff.

I also use it as a PM item a few times a year.

Been using Sea Foam for years, but now the price has doubled since 2006. I've been using Redline SI-1 and love it. You don't even need to use the whole 15oz bottle. I add 3 oz to a half a tank 5 half tanks in a row. My wife thinks I have an OCD

Do I run the risk of "crud" coming loose in my fuel lines by using the techron (and clogging up my fuel filter)?

if you don't use a fuel system cleaner as a regular preventative maintenance item, then you run the risk of clogging your injectors and poppet valves ... the stuff will do a good cleaning job well past the fuel filter location, so I would not worry about the short piece of line before the filter and the filter itself.

I use sea foam, techron and I remember using a mobil one product, anyway, don't know if they do anything, but I do know that with my last 2 trucks, I have had almost 0 fuel injector or performance problems.

Would love to see some independant test results on some of these pour-in-tank miracle cures.

I guess the old saying goes - it can't hurt, or could it???

From what I have heard Amsoil makes a VERY good one. I heard from a buddy who was hauling a race car trailer and on the way a few states away it started to buck and miss one can later it ran better than it did when he bough it used.
