For Longevity, Is Afm Something To Avoid?

Hi All,

Was building a truck online, and when I chose 17" rims it gave the the Max trailering package with the 6.0 VVT/AFM.

My question is, is AFM something to be avoided for longevity purposes? I am not lookijng for a new truck, but if I was, I do not think I want AFM, as I tend to keep a truck atleast 10 years.

Thanks.

Don't think AFM would destroy an engine or anything, maybe the lifters will wear out faster than the standard lifters. With AFM off they act just as standard lifters.

People blame everything on AFM, not sure why those people aren't blaming everything on VVT as well. I'm not sure how VVT works on these trucks but in some of the designs I've seen, I could see it wearing out fast.

VVT uses a phaser to rotate the cam shaft, AFM uses some solenoids and collapsible lifters. Both of them should last pretty long, I wouldn't worry about it. GM had some lifter problems with some 07 and early 08 trucks with AFM but nothing seems to have popped up since then. Also note, for 2010 all half-ton 4.8 and 5.3s get VVT and E85. Also, the 6.0 drops from the half-ton option list but seems to still be available on the half-ton SUVs with the 6.2 picking up the slack left from the 6.0 on the trucks, a Sierra SLE and Silverado LT are listed so not just the decked out ones anymore.
