My Stock Radio.

OK. I just got into my truck last night and noticed that I only have 1 maybe 2 lights left working on the radio. I can only see the Volume and recal button. And the Green display. Does it sound like I have a short or a bad wire connection. The CD player also skips once in a while. Even if I am parked and it is a clean CD. It is the tape H.U. and seperate CD player. And also last night the Rear blinker Bulb on the passenger side burned out as well. They really aren't in relation to each other are they? I would like to find out though since I like to be able to see my radio. Oh and the bulb for the 2, 6 and Auto Tune presets has been burned out since I bought the truck. I plan on getting a new head Unit so It isn't major but would like get it working if I could. Thanks in advance.

My factory deck in my '95 had about 1/2 the lights out when I bought it. I have heard of others having problems with theirs too, not sure of a fix though. I think it is just the lights burning out. I took mine out and put in a Pioneer cd player within a week of buying the tahoe.

Doubt if your blinker is related to the radio lights.

this is common for these radios and the lamps solder in so you need to be able to solder and take care in taking the faceplate off of the radio or else you can crack the board as well as screw up a couple of wiring harnesses...the part# for the lamps is 16005999....there are about 8 or 10 lamps in the radio for backlighting...

if you want me to do it or you need advice, email me...satch@#carolina.rr.com

It's all good. Yea I am pretty handy with the Soldeing Iron. Many years of R/C cars and electronic classes. Thanks for the part #. Where can I go to get the bulbs? I do plan on getting a new radio but not for a few months. And yea I didn't really think it could be related to the blinker. Just coinsidence. Thanks Guys.

i would call up my dealer and ask who does their radio repair work then contact them....and you're correct, the radio lamps are seperate from the tail lights...

Satch,

I am resurrecting this post even though it has been over a year in the hopes that I can get my stereo lights to function again...

Were you actually able to get your hands on a set of these bulbs? I called my local GM parts guy, and the part number you supplied (16189302) did not give him a hit. He went on to say that they send their radios out of state to be exchanged for a refurb'ed unit - costs about $125. The local car stereo repair shop has seen a lot of these, but he claims that you have to replace the entire circuit board at (surprise) a cost of $125. If I have to spend that much, I will just $h1tcan the stock unit and install an aftermarket stereo.

If you have a source for these bulbs, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Tom

It used to be when you saw a car burning out bulbs like crazy, you would look for high voltage in the charging system, like a bad voltage regulator. I dont suppose you would have this problem these days without seeing a warning light on (hey- maybe it's burned out too!). Sorry, I'm being a smart*ss. Good luck.

Scrap the stock set up and go with the pioneer! I got the Pioneer DEH-77 (I think) 1.5 DIN and love it. I got rid of the Slave CD and put a compartment in its place, man, could not be any nicer! The Pioneer is $200, the compartment was $20, and the wiring harness was $15. I sold my, the slave CD for $90, and the cable that connects the two for $15 so it was a net of $130 out of pocket for a much better set up and having the compartment where the CD player was is sweet. If you are interested in doing this you will have to use the top cover from your existing stock radio because it has the rails on it, that was the only snag is there was not an installation kit out there for this set up. It was pretty easy though. If your interested in the installation details email me @ [email protected]

There are 2 different bulbs in the radio, they are not hard to replace.  I will have to find a backup disc on my harddrive and pull the info from there.  I will post the info and part numbers in a few days.

Thanks for the replies!

McCrey, I'm looking forward to hearing back from you with the details. Part numbers would really help. I don't think I have a voltage problem - new alternator recently, and no other symptoms. I think this is a fairly common problem on these radios.

I found this site for a company that repairs the Delco/Bose radios in Corvettes. They sell the bulbs for $2.00 each. I'm pretty sure it is the same bulb/procedure. They sell the bulbs by themselves - the other places that I found on the web would not sell the bulbs, and wanted $85 to do the repair.

Got the bulbs from Corvetteradios, soldered them in. Took me about 2 hours. $22.00 Total. There not LED's, so I don't how long they'll last, but they are different from the originals.

    • GDI Injector tips are in the combustion chamber and yes, they are subject to the same aromatic hydrocarbon based carbon build up the entire chamber is subjected to. Chevron Techron is a PEA based cleaner (polyether amine)  that is VERY effective if the dose is high enough.  Carbon the tips disrupts the spray pattern so keeping them clean is kind of a big deal. It will clean more than the injector tips. It will keep the inside of the injector tip clean as well. When they shut off they 'hot soak' building varnish internally behind the pintle. The tip, unlike most MFI systems have several orifices of very small diameter. They have to stay clean to work right. That spray pattern is supposed to spray into the cup in the piston, not all over the cylinder walls. Old guys will understand...    Top Tier Chevron has enough of the cleaner to be effective if used regularly. Other solutions could be Shell V Power Nitro + Premium and Exxon/Mobil Supreme Plus Premium ONLY use a different chemistry to the same effect with the added bonus of a friction/antiwear additive as well. Red Line SI-1 is PEA based as well with an upper cylinder lube. There's a white paper on their site for shock treatment of system left untreated for long periods. AMSOIL PI has a full system cleaner of yet another chemistry that will strip carbon out of the power cylinder pretty quick. Gumout Regane is also PEA based but at very low doses and those that are isopropanol based will not be effective. Alcohol content is way to low. Chevron Techron in any pump gas, Use by package instructions. 10 oz per 15 gallons every 3,000 miles. First use may require two treatments.    So, Techron, Red Line SI-1 and AMSOIL PI if batch treating and Shell, XOM Premium or any Chevron Fuel will not just keep it clean, but will clean it if dirty. No other fuel "I'm aware of will do that".    Flex Fuel motors. If you use at least 40% alcohol on a regular basis they won't carbon at all. PEA is not recommended for fuels over E-20     (www.carparts.com)
    • It is always a good idea to exercise it at least every few months to make sure the actuators don’t get stuck. It is also a good idea to actually drive it for at least a few hundred feet when you do that so seals experience motion and oil movement.  Off pavement or snow/ice is best for this, but driving wet pavement in a straight line for a  short distance will work if you don’t have other options. I have  forgotten and gone as long as six months between exercising it on my 2021 and it has always shifted promptly.  I usually just use my straight 300 foot gravel driveway.
    • Absolutely!  These forums are legion with posts of people complaining that their truck wouldn't go into 4WD when they needed it to.  Most of them hadn't used it ever or in years.   I try to run mine through the paces every month or so and drive it a few miles on a dirt trail near the house a couple times a year if not already off-roading.
    • The battery is  very new, The  truck is  essentially undrivable  so I have had it  towed  to the  dealer. Since  this is an E Assist  truck  the dealer  seems  the only option at this point. Scan showes multiple  codes. The  repair wll not be  cheap
    • Not a bad idea to check codes. But, if you have an old battery and/or electrical gremlins, most of those codes will be false.
