Gms Next Small Engines To Come From China?

General Motors Co. and Chinese partner SAIC announced Wednesday plans for joint development of fuel-efficient small engines and transmissions, focusing squarely on the fastest-growing segment of China's huge auto market. The companies, which run several joint ventures including their flagship Shanghai GM, will develop a 1 liter to 1.5 liter direct-injection, turbocharged gasoline engine to be used by both sides in China and in globally sold vehicles, they said.

The work will be done in Detroit and at Shanghai's Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, the companies' joint venture engineering and design center.

China is the biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold, and automakers like GM are looking to the country to drive revenues and offset weak global demand, though growth has fallen off since a boom last year fueled by tax cuts and subsidies.

Those incentives, aimed mainly at fuel-efficient vehicles, spurred a surge in sales of Wuling minivans, Chevrolet Sails and other small cars.

"Together, we will continue to quickly provide our customers leading-edge technologies that improve fuel efficiency and deliver robust performance," said Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of global products operations.

The new engine project will also develop front-wheel-drive transmissions to provide about a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over conventional automatic transmissions, GM said.

Overall, vehicles powered by the new engines and transmissions will see up to a 20 percent improvement in carbon-dioxide emissions, it said.

The companies did not provide any financial figures for the new project.

why do I get the Feeling that these Engines are going to be the WORST engines GM has EVER Designed...

Same here, but I hope not for their sake.

Well, if they are designed in US/North America - then some serious quality control - they may be OK.

Little known is that Briggs & Stratton is manufacturing many of its lawn/snow engines in China.

On another note. Bombarier dumped the Johnson brand. Kept Evenrude and Evenrude does not market anything lower than a 15 HP outboard motor (here).

lol like 95% of what we use as consumers comes from china....

Exactly, the engines we have right now probably came from mexico or somewhere beside the U.S. I'm fine with the chinese engines.

Short sightedness?

Kidding aside...I asked the question regarding GMT800 build quality between the Canadian plant and the Mexican plant. Most people (correctly) told me that it really does not matter where it's built...as long as they are using the same parts.

Who cares where the engines are built as long as they are the usual GM reliable?

The Johnson brand was Suzuki built 4 stroke & older non CARB compliant engines. The plan was for Johnson to die after 2006. A few were sold off as 2007's but not many. Evinrudes were the 2 star & now 3 star engines made in the USA, still in production. I am running an Etec 200 HO right now.

As a very satisfied owner of a 202 Mercury 90 HP 2-stroke, I would probably get an Evinrude if I had to choose a new OB. Of course, that could change due to weight and cost...but I like Evinrude a lot.

Mercury makes a good engine but they are having severe financial issues right now and it is crushing the dealers. Mercury just sold Triton Boats to Ranger Boats this month for survival money. This is like Ford or Chevy being sold to one another!

All of our rescue spill response boats now come with Evinrude Etecs due to the collapse of Mercury's dealer network and the Evinrude dealer network remaining healthy. Mercury dealers dropped like flies the last 2 years. You can't get them serviced with no dealers left like you can an Evinrude. Just 10 years ago it was reversed, Evinrude on the ropes fighting for survival & Mercury thriving. How fast times change...

Wow...I had no idea.

That is crazy considering how many MerCruiser out drives I see...they are as common as dirt...far more common than a Volvo OD.

Sad really...

True that, one of my friend's has a chaparral with a 6.2l mercruiser drive in it. I've always wondered if that was a GM 6.2l in it, anyway it halls ass.

Of course...who else made a 6.2 when the bopat was made.

I think MerCruiser is all GM engines. That way...you know your boat will start!
