Painting The Gmc Emblem On My Grille To Match My Truck ...

Recommended Posts

Ok guys so i am going to go ahead and paint the red GMC logo that is on my front grille, black to match my black truck ... I spoke to mod crazy on here and as of right now i am going to use the Dupli color truck van and suv universal black spray and then the clear coat on top .. Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas as far as prepping the red part of the logo .. should I sand it?? prob not because that will scratch it up, should i clean the area with alchohol?? how many coats to use, any do's and dont's .. any tips would be very helpful .. also is dupli color a good paint or should I consider another route .. thanks in advance guys

Actually I would sand,or "scuff" it up,that way it gives the paint some "bit" so it won't want to flake or chip off.

I would go with 3 or 4 light coats,Then a medium finish coat.

wet sand with 2000 grit before you paint

well as far as wet sanding, i have never done it before, but i did a little google research on it .. the biggest part about that is that i was planning on taping around the red gmc logo part and a wet seand would make the top come off .. is spraying the emblem while its still attached to the truck a bad idea or is there a way to remove that entire gmc logo off of the front of the truck and then remove the red gmc out of the chrome?

First tape off whatever you don't want painted. Then scuff it up with 600 grit sandpaper (doesn't need to be wet) until it looks milky. Then clean it with rubbing alcohol, and spray the color coat. Spray as many as you want, 2 or 3 should be enough. If you want some depth to it, I'd do at least 3-5 coats of clear, wait for it to cure then wetsand with 2000 grit and a stiff foam or rubbber block until all the runs, bubbles, waves etc. are out. Then just hit it with some rubbing compound, and polish it up.

That's the process I did with my tails (except I used about 12 coats of clear), and they came out nice and deep and shiny.

ok couple questions .. when u say 600 grit that sounds like it would leave scratches, what do you mean by milky? like i said before i am not educated on wet sanding but u say to do this after the clear coats have been applied, i guess wet sanding wont leave and scratches behind? thanks for the reply

The best way and easiest way to do this is to get tape or tape like material, that is the only words i could think of any way I used this Carbon fiber look a like material. It wa about 5 inches wide and 18 inches long and had the carbon fiber look on top and very sticky backing and was made for inside or outside applications. I guess it was for these tuner kid in the import community anyway I cut a section to fit over the G and rubbed on ggod then took a razor knife and trimmed the edges it also tucks in the gap between th red and the chrome looking out line. I can take off if I want plus I have a black Yukon 07 and the carbon fiber looks good it look darker or lighter from different sides and have had more people ask me where I got that emblem I had a guy at local shop offer to trade me a new 50$ billet logo and 20 bucks I told him how I made it and he could not believe it for 4 dollars I hope he took the billet one back. I bought the material at Advanced auto in the section with window tints and stickers dress up. There is all colors of the material it comes in a roll. hope this gives you another option.
