2500 Vs 3500 Differences?

Recommended Posts

What is the major differences on a 2004 .... 2500 & 3500 non HD single rear wheel truck? It looks to me that the power train options are the same, the frames the same? Rearend options same? Payload is slight greater on the 3500. Am I missing anything major here?

No "HD" badging on either truck....

If it's a GMC they are HD"S but they are not badged as such. Probably the only diference is spring rates and maybe 265s vs 245 tires on the 2500. Mark.

I never seen a 3500 that was not a dual axle.

The 2500 series trucks have LT245/75R16E tires as standard equipment.

The 3500 series trucks have LT215/85R16D tires as standard equipment.

2500 and 3500 series with larger than stock tires

The 2500 series trucks have LT245/75R16E tires as standard equipment.

The 3500 series trucks have LT215/85R16D tires as standard equipment.

A truck that has different tires and wheels will have Engine power/performance concerns, Transmission shift concerns, Speedometer registered speed concerns, and Cruise Control concerns.

Before any diagnosis is performed for these types of concerns, inspect the tires/wheels for the proper tire and wheel combinations.

If a truck is found to have other than the above listed tire sizes, no further diagnosis should be undertaken until the original size tires and wheels are reinstalled on the truck.

The Engine Control Unit (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) use (RPM) and (VSS) inputs as operational parameters for engine torque, transmission shifting, cruise control operation and speedometer indicated vehicle speed.

Calibrations for different tire/wheel combinations are not available.

Therefore changing of tire and/or wheel size should not be undertaken by dealerships or truck owners.

Warranty Information

Reinstalling the proper wheels and tires on the vehicle, prior to performing any type of diagnosis of the truck, would be considered truck owner responsibility and not a warranty repair.

Funny, I used to think that.....3500 always had DRW (dual read wheels). Then, after I got mine, I noticed a fair number of 3500 with single wheels.

Regarding the tire size for the 3500, perhaps since mine is a 3500HD, the load range is E and not D......LT215/85R16E.

IIRC 2004 was the 1st year to offer the 1 ton in SRW.

Thanks! That explains why I used to think that. ;)

I've seen a 2000 1-ton 3500 SRW Cheyenne before..At least the badging said 3500, I don't think the guy switched them out. Had the 350 Vortec in it.

We have 2 1998 crew cab long bed 1 ton single rear wheel trucks at work. They have 14 bolt FF, 4l80e, 4.10s, and 350 vortec. Bone stock since the day we bought them.

haha, yeah, that was the name of a jazz combo band I played keys in for a couple of years a few years back. I made the sig for another forum that only allowed 15 characters in the name. Didn't make sense to have 15 characters in the username and not in the sig, I will get around to changing it soon though

They have been building SRW 3500's for YEARS. My dad considered one when he bought his first 3500, but decided he wanted a dually. He tried Ford first, but they wouldn't build an F350 4x4 as a dually back then. GMC did...and this was 1986.
