My 2007 Silverado LTZ 6.0 has a place for an extra battery to be installed. What advantage would I gain and what is the GM kit number for the parts needed?

Thanks again!

I don't know about your specific year, but from other year wiring diagrams I have looked at, one battery is reserved for starting the vehicle. So you could run down the other battery with accessories on, yet still be able to start the vehicle.

So far as parts, a GM dealer parts department would have that information.

GM wires the second battery strictly for high loads, like plowing. The battery is only on line with the key in the run position. The only way it will help, if the main battery goes dead, is you can use jumper cables, and jump yourself.

I've often wondered why my truck has 2 batteries.

From this thread, sounds like the 2nd battery is only for starting the truck ? (it's a duramax, if that makes any difference)

The diesel requires two batteries to supply the required amperage to turn it over. Since diesels fire by compression instead of ignition, the power required to overcome the compression is much higher than that of a gasoline engine. Plus you have a heater circuit draining even more juice.

Thanks for the clarification! :D
