Exhaust Question

I own a 09 6.0 Sierra and am looking to put a catback system on. I do some towing of a travel trailer in the summertime and was wondering if I should have the pipes exit on the side or out back. Will the trailer hold in any of the sound and make rear exit much louder or doesn't it make that much difference?

I don't like straight out the back for towing as it blows the exhaust onto the trailer, not such a big deal if you're not in a diesel. I also don't like it exiting out the sides behind the rear tires unless you have mud flaps to keep the tips clean. I opted for what I thought looked the best and kept things the cleanest since I like to keep things as clean as I can with the truck. I have my exhaust exiting out the rear corners. For the most part it all comes down to what you think looks the best. Having the exhaust exit straight out the back might make it a little louder in the truck with the sound being reflected off the trailer but I wouldn't think it would be a huge difference. I have a similar question to towing boats with straight pipes. I have a 2010 silverado nbs ls and want to add straight pipes. But will the exhaust damage the boat on the trailer?

It shouldn't hurt anything pointed straight back at the trailer. It will echo some but not much with a boat. I think I'm gonna do corners on mine, that is if I'm not cheap and just put it out one side.

I dumped mine behind the rear end. I wanted straight pipes, but after hooking up a trailer and having the exhaust blow in my face on my old truck I knew I didn't want that again. I liked out the corners but every redneck with a Dodge had already done that, so no to that. And I didn't want a stock looking exhaust. I actually like the no pipe look now.

rear exit will echo against the trailor, it makes a pretty big difference on a long trip. i don't think corner exit will echo as bad, but it may a little. i have a single flow on my truck, using stock pipes, and i have never noticed an echo against my enclosed trailor.

Yep, straight out the back will suck when pulling a camper or enclosed trailer....and you'll get fumes in your face if you're hooking up or un-hooking while the engine is still running. Mine are 45'ed out the corners of the bumper, and it's no louder when pulling my camper. I'd say angle the tips or just dump them towards the ground.

I had the dual exit pipes out the back on my 07 HD. When towing the 5th wheel, the noise did echo off the front of the trailer and the bedroom of the 5th wheel smelled of exhaust...ugh.

 

I had the tailpipes moved to exit at the stock position, but oon both sides...solved all the problems....no exhaust echo or smell....wife is happy!!!!
