I need to replace burned out bulbs in the steering wheel controls. How do I remove/open them to replace/repair? Tried a search but couldn't find anything on this particular model year.

If you don't see a logical way to remove the bulbs and you are not experienced at electronics and taking things apart, then probably best to replace the switch unit.

As to how to replace the switch unit or possible instructions on replacing the bulbs (if the unit is designed to be able to replace the bulbs*), this information would be in a GM Factory Service Manual set for your year/model vehicle. Order from helminc.com or a GM dealer.

*Some things have little tabs/sockets for each bulb and you can untwist these and replace the bulb. With others the bulbs are soldered in and not designed for replacing the bulbs, but could be done by someone experienced with electronics.

Anyway if it is not designed to have the bulbs replaced, the GM manual will say "Not serviceable - replace unit".

It appears I have to remove the steering wheel to get to the unit. I am not sure. The '02 Denali models have different steering wheel controls. Once I can get to it I can solder or replace the unit or bulbs. Any experience with this particular steering wheel setup? The Chilton / Haynes manuals that I have found did not cover it. I will be looking into a Helm's set.

I can't remember exactly how to get them off. I don't think you have to remove the steering wheel completely.

Here is what it looks like with the airbag removed. Maybe that will help?
