Tinting Only Fronts

Recommended Posts

I don't know if I got hosed the last time I got a tint job a few years ago, but they said that they could not just do the fronts and bring them up to the same amount of tint as the rears factory tinting, so they did them all! 25% front, 15% rear- can't really remember.

Question is, can just the front doors be done to bring up to the level of tint of the rear doors, or will they be really mismatched????

Mine are tinted to match the rear and I think they match quite well. I can't remember the percentage but it matches to the naked eye test

With factory tint on the rear, no...you won't match them perfect. I put 25% up front and it IS pretty darn close.

Look at my pics. You can see on the pic from back to front, the front is slightly lighter because the light allowed through the windshield. On the pic taken from front to back, the back window allows in a little light...when looking at it straight from the side (sorry, no pic) it is almost not noticeable.

A 2-ply, 1.5 mil at 15% is exact. I have my fronts only done, and when looking through at a distance that I can see both front and rear with the same background, the perspective is no difference in appearance.

Are most 2ply? Whose product fits that bill exactly?

Tint comes in a variety of ply and mil thickness. Single ply consists of a 3 layer process, the 1st layer has a scratch resistant coating, the 2nd layer is the clear polyester film layer and the 3rd layer is the color with adhesive. The color is incorporated into the mounting adhesive, which is in contact with the window where it is directly exposed to sunlight. UV light will pentrate the color and causes the "purple-ing". 2-ply is a five layer process with two layers of clear polyester film. The first three layers are the same as 1-ply then adding the second polyester film and then clear adhesive. The second layer of polyester helps increase color stability and 1-ply will also crease easier.

Llumar, Scorpion, and GlassMaster are the brands I use, and the color is either charcoal or dark charcoal (this depends on the mfg.). You don't want the color smoke.

My front and rear windows match perfectly.

So do your front and rear tires. :P

The key here is to get a tint that is the same color. Manufacturers all vary slightly. A good tint shop can match the color pretty close... the percentage of tint is not a real issue when matching appearance from the outside.

Tramz-Wow! Thanks for the explanation!! And your sig pic fits you

Can you comment on the ubiquitous 3M film many shops boast?

Haven't used it in over ten years. Back then the dyes would differ slightly from roll to roll on the couple I used so I stopped, but the quality of the film was as equal as the others I use. When you find something that meets your expectations and demands, you stick with it.
