Only Starts On Second Try

Lately my truck hasn't been starting on the first try. Everything sounds fine like it's going to start, the engine just isn't "catching" if you know what I mean. On the second try it starts right up as it normally would.

 

Any ideas?

It sounds like a fuel pressure problem to me, possibly a fuel pressure regulator, but I would start by replacing the fuel filter first. Just a suggestion.

I don't know if it's fixed, but I think it may have been the steering wheel nut. Someone forgot to check the fuel gauge and it may or may not have been almost empty. I'll give it a whirl in the morning, and if it's still doing it, I'll investigate the filter. I just hope it's not the pump...that's one of the last things I want to do.

When my neutral safety switch started going bad I ended up having to try it 2-3 times before it would start(not taking it out of gear), now I have to put it in neutral to start it or take it out of gear and back in park to start it.

Check your fuel pressure at the rail.

 

can you hear your pump Priming when you turn your key forward ??

 

Start with your filter, Then your regulator ( if you have decent fuel pressure )

Id also like to add that I dont know what you mean by "catching"...is it turning over and not starting or just turning the starter?
