Bad Oil Pump?

Recommended Posts

I have a 05 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD with 50K miles. I had the oil changed on Saturday and this morning while driving to work the oil pressure went down to zero and the engine started making a "knocking" sound. I had it towed back to the place where they changed the oil and the mechanic there told me that he's 100% sure it's the oil pump. He also said that this is a common problem for these engines and the at he has replaced quite a bit of them. He told me he would have to replace the oil pump and the lifters. Has anybody had an issue with these oil pumps? Is it a common problem? I would appreciate any feedback thanks.

Assume you have the 6.0 but if you could verify that'd be helpful.

And to answer your question I personally haven't heard of this. I don't work at a dealership though and imagine someone who does would be more knowledgeable.

Common?????

Oil pumps going out are not common in any vehicle. Any vehicle!

Did you check the oil level after you had the problem? Was there any oil on the ground (as in a failed oil filter) after you had the problem?

FAR too coincidental that it occurred right after an oil change. I would guess they forgot to put oil in it or the plug fell out from not being tight or the oil filter leaked all the oil out. Now they are trying to get you to pay for their mistake.

Yes it is a 6.0 and the oil level was normal I checked it before the tow truck took it to the shop. No oil leaking out, just pressure was low or 0.

Thanks for the info, that's highly unusual.

I think it too sounds coincidental too that this happened right after an oil change. Just a thought, but would accidentally starting the truck with no oil in it do this? or How about spinning on an empty filter?

Sounds strange. Please keep us posted.

He is bull%#itting you as its not a common problem and why does he have to replace the lifters? Did you shut it down as soon as you heard the knocking? Iam just wondering if they forgot to put oil in it and started it up and found they didnt put oil in it and damaged the pump then filled the motor, I agree with everyone else something is not right here. Going to be hard to prove and I would let him do the repairs.

I would try a new oil filter first. I had a filter collapse in on it's self and cause the oil pressure to cease on a work truck. A new filter and half quart of oil and down the road I went.

Oil pumps have failed in the past but it is a very rear occurrence. Short term oil starvation of the lifters wont ruin them. On LS series engines the push rods are the weak link.

I am not certain what they did wrong while changing the oil but this failure would be extremely rare and right after the oil change. You are getting scammed in my opinion. I think they might have started the engine without any oil in it and then tried to get you down the road before it got ugly! You need to plan on them paying for this repair.

I'd want to examine the old parts to see what failed, it should be easy to tell if it was run without oil. It's highly unusual for an oil pump to fail, especially at 50k.

I have a 2005 6.0L 2500 Silverado 4x4 that is doing the same thing

Milage is 160K

Several mechanics are able and ready to charge me $5K for engine replacement or $3K for top end overhaul.

One lone mechanic says that this year of 6.0 L engine has history of intake gasket failing and an o-ring on the oil pump failing causing a zero oil pressure condition.

I was told this just yesterday so I am going to let him check on it.

My truck is doing the following:

Morning starts are noisy with lifters yacking

after 4 min warm up start, I usually shut engine off for 30 sec and then re start which usually helps some but oil is about 20psi or less

Once engine revs on take off from stop oil gage moves to ~40psi and bells and indicators stop warning.

Stop at the next stop light and oil pressure goes to 0, upon take off oil pressure goes back to acceptable pressure

This will take place 4-5 times until vehicle is warm enough then it wont do this anymore. Engine sounds great there after

Other item is on interstate engine is quiet runs great but sometime if I push 60mph engine will start yaking again and will continue until I stop let the engine sit and then restart. Other than that the truck runs great!

It just seems if I had a true lifter problem it would do this all the time. I did do an engine clean solution and that did help but the then 0 oil pressure at stops became more prominent.

Had it happen to my 2004 GMC 2500HD 4wd @ about 75k - no oil pressure at start up one day. Turned out to be the pressure relief valve (which is built in to the pump) had a piece of crap in it and wouldn't allow it to close, so no pressure. Changed the pump out and so far so good @ 128k.
