Crankshaft Re-learn

Recommended Posts

So I've had my Blackbear tune installed for about a month, and just last night, the check engine light came on. Took it the parts house, and they read it as the code calling for a crankshaft re-learn. My question is, will it harm anything if I can't get around to taking it in to get a re-learn until next weekend? Or should I swap the stock computers back in?

This might be a dumb question, but I just don't want to tear anything up.

It also seems like I might have a little bit of reduced power now that the code has been thrown. Would that make sense?

Thanks for your help, guys!

Have you tried to do the crank relearn again yourself?

I was under the impression that I either needed EFILive or a TechII. Neither of which I have immediate access to. But Justin is going to be about 50miles away from me next weekend.

Is it possible to do it another way?

I'm not 100% sure but I did my crank relearn in the driveway for my '06 after I got my tuned PCM back from Justin. Did you have to do anything like that for yours? I'll do some searching and see what I can find on the procedure.

Well---there was a security re-learn that was mentioned when the new ECM was shipped...something to do with cycling the key on/off several times and watching for the anti-theft light on the cluster to go dim. That was the only learn I knew of---but I really didn't even have to do that.

Correct. It will not hurt anything. Drive it till next week and then get it done. I even had a dealer do it for me once ( no questions asked, takes about a minute)..

So when you get a computer from Justin, you can drive without doing the relearn? Now I am confused....

there is a security relearn and a crank relearn, two completely diff. things. Justin will try to match a computer as close as he can to your VIN to minimize having to do a security relearn. I didn't have to do the security learn at all, but i thought that everyone would have to do the crank relearn. It sets the camshaft positioning sensor to the new computer. Otherwise the computer thinks it's missfiring. That's how it was explained to me and it makes sense. I didn't notice any performance difference after having it done. You would need EFILive, HP Tuners, or a GM TechII to do the crank relearn.

You will need to do the rel earn cause it ma not run as well as it could but you won t damage anything by driving it until you get the relearn done. A lot of people have driven a lot of miles without having it done right away with no issues.

What you are talking about is the security relearn.

Like everyone else has said, there are two different relearns, a security relearn (can be done by the customer) and a crank relearn (need to be done with EFILive, Tech II or the like).

You can drive around without a crank relearn no problem (other than the light being on) however, we encourage our customers to go and get it done. I would suggest calling a few mechanics and seeing if they have a tool to perform the relearn.

I tried calling the dealerships and hassling the service managers but they kept saying I needed to get my check engine light diagnosed for $98.

When I finally found someone with a tech 2, they didn't follow the directions on the screen and said my tune was bad and Justin didn't know what he was doing. The name of the shop is Vetttech in West Houston in case anyone googles this thread. They are very rude.

After Justin told me to make sure they follow directions, I found a shop that did it.

    • I installed the Auto stop eliminator on my 21 Sierra SLT shortly after I got it. They have a detailed video instruction on how, took me about 20-30 minutes to do. I was apprehensive too to start tearing apart a new truck but it was pretty easy install. Like you mentioned get some trim tools. I went to Harbor freight and picked up a set. If you can find some install videos/instructions to give you and idea for a plan of attack you should be fine.
    • If all oil manufacturers had to meet a higher standard for not just the initial filtering of the oil but that they had to improve on their formulation so that the oil cleaned the engine such as the Valvoline R&P or the new Mobil product ( assuming it works similar of course ), and the oil was changed on an interval based on good UOA data, there shouldn't be any gremlins running around like miniture rats on top of your heads to be washed down into the oil pan below 😁

    • A while back on another thread there were comments and thoughts on air filters and I know that can tend to be a bit of a hot topic because of outfits that have a vested interest in selling aftermarket air boxes fitted with the gauze type of oiled elements touting the lower air restriction. However and unfortunately I don't know where I have seen the test results in the past about the amount of dirt through a test procedure that these style of filters do pass more dirt through than a properly designed ( not some cheap Chinese knock off ) paper/synesthetic media filter can do. Lake Speed had a conversation on that topic with one of the employees at Donaldson and there seemed to be a consensus of these oiled filters falling short in the absolute percentage of dirt holdback.    Which all ties back into how good the air filter is on the engine at keeping dirt out as that is going to reflect as a contaminant introduced into the oil as well as cylinder wear even if some of that dirt does find its way out of the exhaust rather then the crank case. Put another way that one can throw the kitchen sink at filtering the oil and using a bypass system which I fully expect will do nothing but good for the oils contamination but if the air filter system isn't doing its job then its preventing the engine from reaching the best wear/lasting case scenario instead.    Now perhaps this topic is or isn't for this particular thread but Grumpy Bear or anyone else for that matter, do you have access to some scientific trust worthy testing on engine air filter types to get some proper comparison data to post up.
