Problems With 7 Pin Trailer Harness Bracket

Recommended Posts

can anyone help me, me and a buddy went four wheeling this week. i have a 2004 gmc sierra with 33 in tires and a leveling kit. my problem im having is i have bent my 7 pin trailer harness bracket on the hitch. my question is has anyone had this problem and is there a better spot to put this bracket so its out of the way. it had trapped my hitch lock in place so i couldnt take my hitch cover out to install my hitch hook  . my buddy got stuck right behind me in the ditch.

I bought a project box from Radio Shack and used heavy cable ties to mount mine directly to the hitch rather than hanging below it.

I used a hole saw and cut a hole to the left of the license plate for a 7way rv plug. Similar to the current trucks set up.

How do you get the 7-pin connector out of the bracket that mounts to the hitch? I'd be willing to move my connector so that it's out of the way, but I haven't screwed around that set-up much. Any pics by chance?

If it is the factory 7 way rv plug all you need to do is unplug the pig tail from behind the socket. Then use a 2 inch hole saw to cut a hole in the bumper to the left (driver's side) of the license plate centered from top to botttom. It's only 1/8 inch mild steel. You may need to clean the hole with a file. Then slide one of these in the hole.

Drill 4 screw holes to bolt it to the bumper. Take that pig tail you disconnect from the factory plug, re route it over top of the hitch and plug it into the plug you just bolted to the bumper. I will try to get you some pictures. I traded my truck I did it to but it was still on the lot the other day.

Here is the hole saw

He is the plug on my new truck which is the same location I had it in my old one.

i had thought about doing this but was unsure on if the chrome would start flaking or not. was it ok after the cut?

The chrome did not flake at all. Also forgot that I got some silver touch up paint and painted the edge of the hole to seal it up from rusting. I will try to get some pictures from my old truck.

I'll have to take a better look at the plug, but I couldn't see how the pigtail disconnected. Doesn't mean I can't do it, just haven't paid much attention to it. Thanks for the info, I'll definitely give it a shot.

The tab to pull the pig tail off the plug in on the top where you cant see it easily.
