Yeah, been around for a long time.

Kind of out-dated.

Take AC Delco. they were made by champion labs, them Purolator made them, I see them at Wal-Mart that are made by Purolator. Champion Labs is back making them with a new design. They are Champions E core filter. I have been seeing them at Oreillys.

Very interesting reading.... I didn't realize that the Mobil1 and K&N are basically the same filter. I've been swearing by the K&N oil filters for years on my vehicles.

It's interesting that some of the brands are not commonly available in my region. The Wix brand isn't common unless you find them in NAPA. Baldwin, I've never seen in auto parts stores here. Probably find them in the heavy truck parts distribution sources.

I've been using K&N and Mobil 1 filters for the last 10 yrs, with the occasional ACD filter. From what I've read, my choices have been pretty good, if not simply "safe".

The Mobil 1 brand reputation is worth literally bazillions. Protecting the brand with high quality products is probably high on Exxon-Mobil's list. I feel better when a manufacturer of a product has a lot to loose if his products don't maintain a pristine reputation.

Trouble is they contract them out. Champion labs makes the Mobil 1 and K&N as well as AC Delco. And yes they are good filters.

I usually use AC Delco but right now I have a Mobil 1 filter on the truck. It came from AutoZone in a Buy oil special and get a Mobil 1 filter for free.

It's mostly dumb luck that I picked a good filter to use all this time, since I hadn't researched it. I just threw money at it and hoped. Hope is a sorry way to get what you want, I know.

Even when a company contracts out mfg of it's products, if maintaining a desired level of quality is important, they'll put some effort into assuring quality. These days, outsourcing is more common than in-house manufacturing. My company has parts made everywhere, with less and less made in-house. Not a trend I think is wise...but whadda I know?

Very true. Years ago I used to work at a plant that made plastisols, elastomers, vinyls, foams, etc. We made the rubbery foam material that held automotive air filters together for a couple different companies (some black, some orange) and each had their own specs and would be tested in our lab before it given the OK to package and ship.
