What Tires Should I Go With?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2008 Crew Cab Silverado that has a 2.5 Front leveling kit and i'm wanting to go with a bigger tire. I have the stock 275 20's right now. Just wondering if anybody has the same set up as i have with a bigger tire. I really like the cooper stt and the nitto mud grappler in 33 12.50 but i dont know if its too much tire. I have also considered the cooper zeon LTZ or Nitto Terra Grappler.

This is my truck now but i'm goin back with the stock 20's when i get the tire i want. Thanks for any help

If they made a Cooper Zeon LTZ in a 285/70/17 I'd be putting them on in a heartbeat but they don't. I like Cooper tires. They are a great price but also very reliable

If you're looking at those tires you mentioned and really intend to go off-road to use them, you might consider going down to a 18" or 17" rim to give you more sidewall. Short sidewall tires can allow rocks and severe bumps to bend rims. If you're not planing off-roading, the 20's will be fine of course.

I would steer clear of 33x12.50's with just the leveling kit. Unless you want to cut up your fenders. Of course the stockers will eliminate some of the problem.

Do you think a set of 305/55/20 would fit on that setup or would they rub??....or am I just being an idiot because they are equivelent to the 33x12.50's??

The offset of the wheels i have on right now are different from the factory, so i have already had to do some trimming. I do some off roading but mainly on the highway. I really like the cooper stt but i'm afraid of paying 1,200 for something and it killing my fenders. I dont really like the look of the factory 17's or 18's.

Nearly everyone drives mainly on the highway. The real question is: How 'off-roady' do you get? (how hard and in how rough of a terrain do you drive?) The tires you are asking about suggest a very difficult terrain use.

Its really not that rough. I think more then anything i just love the look of the STT on these trucks. I work with a guy that has a new ford with STT 35's and thats really what made me want them.

Burt,

go for a ride with your friend. Get up to highway speeds and see if the noise level is acceptable to you. I use my truck mainly to commute and haul dog stuff around, with the occasional hunt trip during the fall/winter. I opted for a quiet, conservative treaded, A/T tire. I like quiet. I can hear my Bose system that cost me extra.

Hes onto something with M/T's being noisy.. I run just a 265 a/t and i go mudding all the time, should of scene the car wash attendents face last weekend before the snow started hitting the ground.. Anyways my concern with you wanting to put 33X12.5's.. it will A: most likely rub ive read a few of them who say that wide of a wheel does.. especially on the stock wheel. B: Stock wheels range from 7-8 inches wide, do you want 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches of tire overall hanging over your rim? I know they allow it to be ran on a 8inch, but I would be concerned with wall stability. If i was to go with a 33x12.5 i'll run them on a 18x9 helo maxx wheel, looks sick, has the offset you need...

either way keep us posted, I just wouldnt do it w/o additional lift, and then you might as well look at your friends 35's.

Nope..same tire. I tried to mount 305/55's (33x12.50) on aftermarket 20x8.5's with 5.5" backspacing, which isn't too terribly far off from stock, with just a 2" leveling kit when I first bought my truck. It didn't work. I couldn't turn the wheels with it sitting stationary in the driveway. There is a member on this site running those tires with a 3" lift and he had to cut metal to clear them. And OP,I vote you stay with the 20's, as they look the best on these trucks. 17's and 18's look too small IMO.

Here is a thread from a member who runs 305/55/R20 BFG AT KO's (33.4" H x 12.4" W) on a 2007 NNBS Chevy Silverado 4x4 with Stock 20's and a 2" Rough Country Leveling Kit:

305/55/R20's on NNBS

I'm gonna run 295/55/R20 Nitto Trail Grappler M/T's (32.91" H x 12.52" W) on my 2008 GMC Sierra 4x4 with Stock 20's and a 2.25" Readylift Leveling Kit. 33x12.50's look so much better to me. But, whatever you decide to do, good luck with it...

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
