No 3.73 Or 4.10 Gears With The 5.3 For 2010?

In looking at the order options for the 2010 Silverado Extended Cabs I find no option for the 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratios. What the heck is going on? Is GM trying to kill sales of these trucks or what? How is anyone going to be able to tow anything? The 3.73 ratio on my 2008 is perfect for me and while I was considering trading for a 2010, that thought is now gone. Please tell me I am wrong.

Nope,Your not wrong,no 3.73 or 4.10's,unless you get the "NHT" Max-Trailering Pkg. which comes with the 6.2/6-spd/3.73's.

With the 6L80 6 speed trannys more aggressive gear ratio's vs the 4L60 4 speeds you don't need the lower gear ratio's. With the 3.42's and 6L80 and 5.3L it's equivalent to a 4L60 4 speed 5.3 with just under 4.56 gearing.

The 3.42 6L80 5.3's should easily out tow and outperform the older 4 speeds setups.

The 3.73 or 4.10's are perfect for 4L60 5.3L trucks I agree.

Thanks Ryan,I didn't know how to 'splain it like that! :(

lol it seems like these threads pop up around this time of year.

to the OP, as stated already- 3.42s are a great gear in the 6L80E and will perform and tow better than 3.73s and 4.10s in the 4L60E. If you're planning on doing some serious towing, get the NHT package and you'll have one beast of a truck :(

Just to give you a little more perspective:

1st gear in the 6L80E with 3.42s has the same final drive ratio as the 4L60E with 4.56s (mathematically 4.50s)

5th gear in the 6L80E with 3.42s has the same final drive ratio as the 4L60E with 4.10s (when the 4spd is in 4th gear)

^^ so as you can see, you'll pull better off the line but not sacrifice MPH on the highway (still have another OD gear to go too which will lower the RPMs for cruising)

This gets brought up so much. I'm not sure how many people (including the sales people) understand final gear ratio.

I almost wish GM would have went the route Toyota went with their 6 speed trucks and put a lower (numerically) gear transmission and a higher (numerically) rear-end, just so people would freak out and not think they can tow anything.

Good point... i wonder how many people out there decided on another brand solely for the reason that the GM has 3.42s and "you can't tow with 3.42s!".... poor saps :(

i think their "super" tow package comes with 4.30s.... not sure what their tranny gearing is, but it didn't pull any better than the 6.2 6spd combo (i test drove em back to back last year when i was truck shopping)

Very true. It's not just the gearing though. To be fair, the Tundra has a stock 10.5" ring gear on the 5.7. It's pretty "big" compared to the 8.5" on the standard GM axle. Does that make it better? I don't know, but it does "look" similar to a GM HD gear set (good for marketing), but the differential itself is not as stout.

Yeah,I remember that commercial a couple years back when the new Tundra came out showing their "bigger" differential compared to the "competitors" (They did the same thing with their transmission and brake rotors :()

I think the 9.5" diff. in mine is pretty stout for what I need it for! :fume:

I believe you are right. The stock gears are 3.90's

I had a TH350 and a 3.08 in my '70 and never had any trouble towing up to 6k. Course now I have a 5.3/4L60E/3.42 combo. Pulls better due to the deeper first gear in the trans and the ratio being a 3.42.
