Gmt900 Speaker Install Question

Well, I started to install my Infinity Reference speakers this evening and ran across something interesting. The hole in the door panel for the speakers is not just a round hole (see photo below). I have also attached the closest bracket that fits the hole. See that it doesn't fill the gaps below and above the speaker. Stock speaker shown at the bottom. Question is, will that effect the sound? Seems to me it would. Do I need to cut a peice of 1/4" plywood to cover the entire space, then mount. Any input ASAP would be greatly appreciated as I have my door torn down now, and would really like to get the speakers in before I have to put everything back together to drive it tomorrow.

I'd absolutely fill in the gaps. You don't have to use plywood...You could use dynamat or any other sound deadening material. Those open gaps will severely effect your midbass performance.

I know its a little late but I would cut some baffles out of 3/4" MDF or Birch plywood to mount the speakers too. ap0352 is right that leaving gaps will severely ruin your midbass. While covering the holes in dynamat might seem like an easy solution its not the right way to go about it. Your going to get tons of resonance and your not going to gain much of anything in midbass. Its like bringing a .22 elephant hunting.

You'll be amazed at how much of a difference that the baffles will make with you midbass. Since your running Infinity References your going to need all the help you can get.

Here is a pic of my baffling in the Denali:

so you recommend using a 3/4 mdf piece to cover the odd shape hole, and cut out the opening for the speaker. versus using a speaker adapter like the ones on ebay?

I'm looking at doing this as well. Is there anything behind your MDF ring? Doesn't seem like it covers a whole lot. How about using one of those foam baffles that seals around the back of the speaker and keeps dust and water off it? You could then use Dynamat on the outside door(under the door cover). Would that be a good solution. I'm going with Focal CAs.

Thanks
