Remote Start Workaround?

I thought I might throw this question out there and see if any of the fellow GM gear heads have figured out a workaround for the remote start on our GMT 900 trucks (or maybe other models for that matter). Here is what I'm looking for: I hate how to use the remote start you have to lock the doors twice then hit start. Now if the truck is running on remote start and you get in it you can not do anything (except maybe fold the power mirrors) anything that requires the vehicle to be on, turning on the radio, does not work. So I really don't think it's a theft deterrent feature but more likely a feature to prevent accidentally starting the vehicle. I may be purchasing the advanced remote start set up later this year and I am not sure if this would solve the problem, please let me know if it does, or if not I think this would make the experience even worse. So the question out there again, is there a way to bypass the 2 signals to lock the doors and go straight to start signal on a remote start of my truck?

I have the remote start and I wouldn't change a thing. It works fine as it is. When I go out and unlock it after starting it I insert key and turn it on and it works as normal.

My only complaint is that it shuts off after 10 minutes,And then you can only re-start one more time for another 10 minutes,After that you must use the key.

Interesting......on my '07 I only have to lock the doors once.

When I remote start the truck, I don't think the radio works...but then if I'm in the truck, I'll just use the key. ;)

The heated seats will come on automatically with the climate control.

My Buick with an after-market remote-start acts the same way.

It dosent let you control anything else because gm is trying to limit what your vehicle is turning on as it first starts remotely... Theres no real reason for you to be 1000 feet + away and start your truck and have radio playing ... The remote starts job is to start / warm / cool...

Now i would imagine that you could wire an aftermarket starter on it so that you could have what ever on in your truck playing while you are 1000+ feet away

I am not trying to get the radio on when I remote start. I am happy with the remote start. I think I might have been misunderstood I am looking for a workaround to prevent the need to hit door lock, door lock, start. If I could just hit start to remote start my truck I would be happy. So instead of hoping for 3 signals to make it to the truck I only have to have 1 the start.

It could be that GM simply wanted the safety feature of having the doors locked when the vehicle is started remotely. Even though remote start won't allow you to get in and move the vehicle (no key in the ignition so thee is no way to put the tranny in gear), the second push requires you to hold the button down for a couple seconds until the parking lights flash. That flash signals that the PCM is ready to allow the vehicle to be started with the button on the fob.

I would bet that GM could have allowed any of the accessories to operate if they wantedit that way. But if security is behind the two push process, then it would makes sense that things like the power windows won't work either.

It would be interesting to see if Ford or Dodge has a remote start feature that works the same way. Gotta push the remote door lock button twice or some other sequence in order to get their feature to work.

Some cities have laws against people letting an unattended vehicle run. Too easy to steal a vehicle if somebody goes out on a cold morning to start their car with the key and let it run until it's warmed up. With the doors locked by default and no key in the ignition, that makes the GMT900 much harder to steal whenremote start is used.

Something to add to the 10 minute problem:

Start the truck with the fob: Lock, start for 2 seconds. Park lights flash and truck starts.

Now...while its running, press the lock again, and then the start again for 2 seconds. When you press the lock, the lights will flash just like if the truck wasn't running. After you hold the start button again for 2 more seconds, the park lights will flash again. There! you just added another 10 minutes to the timer without having to shut the truck off and restart it.

I think the "2-push" start function is helpful in preventing "inadvertant starts". I've had many aftermarket remote start systems, all with "one push" start buttons. I've had many accidental starts, as well as my wifes car doing the same. Her's will start with her keys bumping around in her purse. I've gone into my shop from the house to discover my F-350 deisel running!

The fact that the radio is not on with any other accessories is to prevent undue load on the battery and starting system on start-up during sub-zero temps. All those accessories on would add strain at start-up.

Same here. 1 time is all thats needed on '07s

Owners manual states "press lock button on key fob once, then hold down start for 2 secs." Why would some trucks require 2 "locks" and others only one. That don't make no sense! Both my dad's 2500 HD and his cadillac are only one lock push for remote start also. :loser:

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
